TALLADEGA NASCAR XFINITY Series News

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Elliott Sadler wins XFINITY race at Talladega:

#1-Elliott Sadler won the Sparks Energy 300 at Talladega Superspeedway. It is his 1st XFINITY Series win of the season, the 11th of his XFINITY career and locks him into the XFINITY Chase for this season.
#22-Logano was leading coming to the checkered flag, but he moved up to block #1 Sadler from taking the lead, then came back down and made contact with Sadler, sending him into the outside wall. He finished 27th. Several other drivers were collected and NASCAR had to review video to determine the finishing order. Although #48-Poole got back to the start finish line first, NASCAR determined that the caution came out prior to that, freezing the field. Sadler was credited with the win.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. racing sweeps first and second with #7-Justin Allgaier finished second, followed by #48-Brennan Poole, #51-Jeremy Clements, #62-Brendan Gaughan, #2-Austin Dillon, #19-Daniel Suarez, pole sitter #18-Matt Tifft, #98-Aric Almirola, and #88-Chase Elliott.

Connecticut modified shoe, Ryan Preece driving the GK Chevrolet #01 started 26th today and has qualified in all 9 racesin the Xfinity series in 2016 . Preece finished 15th on the lead lap for the first time in 2016 and earned 26 points. Preece sits 17th with 159 points and 155 out of first.

Tony Membrino text from Ryan: Ryan texted me after the race said Sadler was slamming him so hard almost turned him a couple times, GREAT RUN RYAN!!!!

Matt Tifft on XFINITY pole at Talladega: #18-Matt Tifft won the pole for the Sparks Energy 300 at Talladega Superspeedway with a speed of 181.168mph. It is his first career pole. #19-Daniel Suarez will start second. The rest of the top 10: #2-Austin Dillon, #20-Erik Jones, #3-Ty Dillon, #62-Brendan Gaughan, #16-Ryan Reed, #22-Joey Logano, #1-Elliott Sadler, and #44-J.J. Yeley.

Victory Would Make for 'Sweet' Birthday Weekend KYLE BUSCH

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina (April 27, 2016) – What to get a guy for his birthday who seemingly has everything?
That guy happens to be Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Skittles/Marvel Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), owner of 36 first-place trophies in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition and 161 winner’s trophies in all among NASCAR’s top three series. For Busch, the answer is quite simple – more trophies and, perhaps a slice of birthday cake made with Skittles?
Busch blows out the candles to celebrate his 31st birthday Monday and would like nothing more than to start the celebration in victory lane at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway as the winner of Sunday’s Geico 500 Sprint Cup event. The race will also mark Busch’s 400th career Sprint Cup start, and there are six drivers who scored victories in their 400th career start, with Jimmie Johnson the most recent one to do it when he won the 2013 Daytona 500. Interestingly enough, Busch brought home the victory at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth in 2013 while making his 300th Sprint Cup start.
Even though Busch’s birthday isn’t until the day after race day this year, he does hold the distinction of being only the second driver in Sprint Cup history to celebrate a victory on his birthday with a win at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway on May 2, 2009, a feat first accomplished by Cale Yarborough – twice. Yarborough won on his March 27 birthday at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway in 1977 and at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1983. Since then, Busch’s JGR teammate Matt Kenseth equaled the feat as he won in 2013 on his March 10 birthday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
As for this weekend, Busch has conquered the mammoth, 2.66-mile Talladega oval just once in 21 career starts at the track, his lone win coming in April 2008. He has accumulated nine other top-15 finishes at the track but also exited four outings early due to accidents.
Busch knows the winner of Sunday’s 500-mile race will not only need to have a strong car, but must be in the right place at the right time during the final laps on NASCAR’s longest track. So, if anyone is considering what to get Busch as a belated birthday gift, any help earning a second career Talladega trophy would be greatly appreciated. And having the Skittles colors to celebrate with in victory lane would make for one “sweet” birthday weekend.

KYLE BUSCH, Driver of the No. 18 Skittles/Marvel Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

Are superspeedways more mentally draining than other racetracks?
“At Talladega, the physical demand isn’t that big of deal. You can run around there all day long and not break a sweat, really. Once you get down into the nitty gritty of the race and try to play the chess game at the end of the race, you’ve got to really pick and choose your spots and think all the time if you go here and team up with this guy. It really wears on you a little bit, mentally. I would say Talladega is 80 percent mental and 20 percent physical, while most other non-restrictor-plate races are 80 percent physical and 20 percent mental. We’re hoping to be in position with our Skittles Camry Sunday to give it another shot at the win.”
Is it any more special to get a win on your birthday or, in this case, your birthday weekend like this one at Talladega?
“I think anyone who knows me or has followed me knows that it doesn’t matter if it’s my birthday or whatever it is. I love to win and love to be able to add to the trophy case. That’s what we do, what it’s all about, and the focus each week. I think you do learn over the years that you can’t win them all, but that sure doesn’t stop us from trying. Winning is huge for our sponsors, too. It’s what drives all of us to get better each week. We have Skittles on the car this week, one of my favorites. You really have to be in the right place at the right time at Talladega so, hopefully for all of us, we are there when it counts on Sunday.”
Is it an advantage being a former winner at Talladega?
“It doesn’t matter at all. It’s such a crapshoot there in the last 20, 30 or 40 laps that you never really know who is going to win, what’s going to happen and where the wreck is going to come from.”
What is the key to pulling off a victory at Talladega?
“The key there is to somehow stay out of trouble. You stay where the pack is, generally, and we get up single file on the wall at times until it’s time to go, and you can pretty much run wide open every single lap. Everyone can run up on top of each other. When you get single file at the bottom, sometimes it’s hard to get a lane on the outside with enough good cars to get something going. It can be frustrating at times because of that. It also seems to still put on a good race each time we go there. If you can be a contender and stay in line on the bottom, you can make it a pretty easy and safe race. Normally, guys are not content doing that, so that’s when it starts to get crazy.”

Valenti Modified Racing Series Goes Green At Monadnock Saturday

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Pascoag, R.I.. – 13 years ago Kirk Alexander was in prep mode ready to
try something new. The Modified Racing Series was set to debut at
Monadnock Speedway, Winchester, NH.
Right off the trailer Alexander was fast that night. Potent enough to win
the series opener and lay the foundation to become the all-time Valenti
Modified Racing Series winner.
Steve Masse
Alexander hopes to add to that total this Saturday night when the VMRS
kicks off a 16-race schedule at the popular ¼ mile facility with the
running of the Bond Auto Parts ‘Spring Dash 100.’ Alexander has
garnered 31-series victories.
Fresh off a practice day a week ago at Monadnock where Alexander
reeled off fast laps throughout the shake down session, the 16-time
winner at his home track was pleased how things went first time out. He
clocked a 12.7 lap time before the day was over in the John Corliss
owned # 43.
“I made changes to the car,Alexander said this week. “Changed some
geometry. The car is more stable and has more forward bite. Reminds
me of my old car.
Alexander hopes to have a better season than last. “Worst luck I have
ever had in a race car. Nothing went right. Hopefully the changes we
have made will make for a better season.”
Woody Pitkat, of Sturbridge, MA, the reigning Valenti Modified Racing
Series Champion is entered for Saturday’s race. Pitkat, after the 2015
season, moved to a race team fielded by longtime racer Dan Stebbins, of
Bernardston, MA. With Pitkat, last years championship team members
including crew chief, Greg Feldon, Bob Norris, and Jason O’Grodnick
also moved to the Stebbins entry.

Former Series Champion Chris Pasteryak, of Jewett City, CT., will
compete this weekend in a brand new Troyer mount. The new car last
year now becomes a new ride for his father Charlie to be run in selected
events. Chris will not be running for his third title with conflicting race dates with previous commitments.
He will skip the May 20 Valenti Modified Racing Series event at Stafford Motor Speedway and will also miss the Valenti Modified Racing Series event on Sept. 17 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Me. to instead run in the 250-lap Race of Champions on Sept. 17 at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway.
Former Monadnock Champion Todd Patnode, of Richmond, NH is
entered for the Spring Dash 100 lap race. Jon McKennedy, of East
Chelmsford, MA, already a two-time winner this season in PASS South
Series competition, is an expected entry.
Richard Savary, of Canton, MA, Todd Annarummo, of Swansea, MA,
Matt Mead, of Richmond, NH, and Long Island, NY’s Dave Schneider
are slated to compete.
Newcomers Ryan Kuhn, of East Bridgewater, MA, son of former series
regular Jimmy Kuhn, and 15-year old T.J Bleau, of Troy, NH, will debut

this weekend.
Saturday’s race program begins at 5:00 PM. The heat races in this division are worth the price of admission !

Payea Captures First Win of the 2016 ACT Season and a Great Sixth Place Run for Emily Packard

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Seems a mid-week decision to run the 9x Northstar Fireworks/Packard Fuels car at Lee USA Speedway this past Sunday was the right call for Emily Packard and her team as she posted a sixth place finish in the Governor's Cup 150.  "I think us working together (with the Polewarczyk's) again this weekend was a great way to keep the momentum going for the season," said Packard.  "The more fun we have together and the more we work together and get use to each other the better we are going to be and that showed in this weekend's results with our sixth place finish."

Milton, VT’s Scott Payea took the lead for the second time of then afternoon on lap 117 and never looked back winning the NH Governor’s Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway.
Payea drove a smart and patient race from his third starting spot, running upfront all day,  the leading laps 49-54 and saving his tires for the late run sprint to the finish. Defending race winner and 2015 ACT Champion Wayne Helliwell Jr., raced to a second place finish coming from the 9th starting spot with Rhode Island’s Ray Parent ending a strong weekend in third. St-Albert, Quebec’s Alex Labbe finished fourth with Quinny Welch of Lancaster, NH rounding out the top 5. Nineteen year-old Emily Packard raced to a sixth place finish with last weeks Oxford 100 winner Bobby Therrien finishing seventh. The “outlaw” Eddie MacDonald was eighth with Kyle Welch and Brad Babb rounding out the top ten.

On Saturday, taking advantage of an entire day to practice, the team spent much of the day working the set-up of the car, while Emily logged laps, providing feedback to the crew on the adjustments that would help to make the car better.  "Saturday we started the off the day not quite where we wanted to be on the time sheet.  We were running too soft in the springs and we were bottoming out bad, combined with running on old tires," said the 19-year old.  "The guys kept making small adjustments to the car throughout practice, making sure not to go too far.  Finally, they gave me some new tires and got me up off the track and we were second fast on the sheet in the fourth practice of the day."  In the last practice, Emily found herself to be eighth on the time sheet as she ran lap after lap to see how the car would change under a long green flag run.  "I decided that there was a half hour of practice left, let's put some older tires back on and go run a 50 lap run," said Packard. "So we did, and we were able to get a feel for how the tires would hold up, and we found that there wasn't too much fall of as far as our lap times went."

On race day, Packard headed out to the final practice with high confidence that the car was going to be good.  She would post the eleventh fastest time, and both she and the team were happy and ready to race.  Starting in the fourth position in the third heat, Packard would line up on the outside, knowing the preferred line would be the inside.  Emily and Kevin (her spotter) had a quick discussion on the radio, with him telling her he would clear her down as soon as a spot would open.  On lap one of the heat race, the yellow would wave for a spinning car out of turn 2 and with no official lap in the books, they would revert back to the original starting line-up for the restart.  Packard would restart in fourth, but at the halfway point of the 12 lap heat race, she would be in the third spot, several car lengths over the fourth place finisher.  As she crossed the line on the final lap she would finish in the third position, transferring her into the feature race, where she would start eleventh.  "We started fourth and were able to get to the bottom and hold it there in third place," said the East Montpelier driver. "I ran hard for a couple of laps, and the car didn’t feel quite as good as it did in practice.  I knew I wouldn't catch the second place car, and I had a little room behind me over fourth, so I just relaxed a little and finished in third with a plus one."

The 150 lap Governor's Cup feature was next, and Packard started on the inside lane in eleventh position.  "Our stagger went really crazy during the heat race," said Packard, "and we made some adjustments to the air pressure to bring it back to where we were.  When we started the feature, I kind of just went because this is the type of track that by the end of it we are lined up single file, so we knew that if we were going to make any passes we needed to do it right away."  By lap 50 the young Vermont driver would find herself in the eighth position, and would battle the two cars in front of her for the next 60 laps.  She would eventually move up to seventh when the caution came out with 10 to go.  On the restart, Emily was able to make a move to advance to the sixth position, only to have the caution wave one more time.  The green would wave for the restart on lap 141, and Emily would continue to hold on to that sixth position as she took the checkered flag.  "My goal coming into this race was, last week we finished outside the top ten, so this week I wanted to finish inside the top ten," Emily said, "and next week I'd really like to finish in the top five so we can keep progressing and growing as a team."

"This week I want to say thanks to Joe and Joey Polewarczyk, they did an awesome job getting the car ready this week.  Joe Sr. was on the radio with me on Saturday and it was nice to have him there to give me advice," Emily said. "He coached me on how to drive the track, especially getting down into three and getting up off of turn four better than I ever have, so I can't thank him enough.  I also want to say a big thank you to my mom and dad, Shawn, Jamie Sr., Jamie Jr, Nate, Scott, Kasey, Brian, Nicole and Kevin for all their help at the track this weekend.  I also have to send out a huge thank you to all my sponsors that help to make this happen; Northstar Fireworks, Packard Fuels, Rutland Regional Medical Center, Be The Match, Vermont Country Campers, Yipes! of Barre,  Berlin Optical Expressions, Creative Visions, Fecteau Homes and GossCars.com."

Next up Emily and the Northstar Fireworks/Packard Fuels team head to Thunder Road for the 18th Annual Merchant's Bank 150 on Sunday May 1st.  The weekend kicks off with the Barre Car Show on Saturday April 30th from 9 to noon.  From there the cars will parade up to Thunder Road for an afternoon of practice in preparation for the American Canadian Tour race on Sunday.

Kenny Tremont Jr.overcomes tricky track to win 126th Modified Feature

Posted by Wayne G. Barber  Lebanon Valley Speedway

Stock, Pure Stock and 4-Cylinder classes took to the high banks for their first races of the year.  Unfortunately, the high banks bit back.

In the Modified feature, Kyle Sheldon started on pole, but hit a hole wrong in turn 1 on the start and went up the hill.  That allowed Keith Flach to move into the lead.  A combination of Kyle Armstrong stopping on course and a flag being blown out of the flag stand due to brisk wind brought out a quick caution shortly afterwards.  Armstrong would continue.

On the restart, a collision involving Paul Gilardi, Kolby Schroder and newcomer Stan Frankenfield brought out another yellow.  Gilardi, who was racing with a pinched nerve in his neck, along with Frankenfield, were out on the spot.  Schroder did briefly return to the race, but later retired.

The conditions led to a great deal of attrition.  Brian Berger retired early due to a suspension failure.  Andy Bachetti dropped out early as well, as did Steve Hough due to overheating.  Even Brett Hearn had issues, breaking a shock tower on lap 6.  Despite the breakage, he was able to get up to second.

The most serious incident of the night occurred on lap 8 when Mike King and Denny Soltis collided and spun into the wall in turn 1.  King walked away from the crash, but Soltis complained of a back injury.  Medical staff checked Soltis out and gave him a ride back to his pit.

On the restart, Kenny Tremont, Jr. made his move.  Tremont went to the outside of Hearn in turns 1 and 2, bringing the fans to their feet.  Tremont cleared Hearn, then immediately tried to go to the inside of Flach in turn 3 for the lead.  That move didn’t work out, but Tremont continued to pressure the Ravena native.  A lap later, Tremont was able to make the move stick.

While Tremont pulled away from the pack, Hearn fell back into the clutches of NASCAR K&N Pro Series East regular Tyler Dippel, who will be making intermittent appearances during the season.  Dippel tried to make the move on Hearn, but could not make it stick.  Eventually, Hearn was able to pull away from Dippel and run Flach back down for second.

Hearn eventually regained second with ten laps to go, but by that point, Tremont had nearly a full straightaway lead.  From there, Tremont held on to take his record 126th career Modified win at Lebanon Valley by more than five seconds.  Afterwards, Tremont was pleased with his performance.

“[My car] was actually pretty good,” Tremont said in the pits.  “It took me a while to get used to going through the hole in turn 1, but once I figured out what was best for the car, I think we were able to go through there and make up some time.  That was the key for me tonight.”

Hearn battled his broken right rear shock tower and a head cold to finish second.  Flach was third, while Dippel was fourth.  Eddie Marshall rounded out the top-5.
