The Young Guns took to the track first for their 10 lap feature event. Eventual race winner Bella Minchella in the 99 led the field to the green. Minchella jumped out to a comfortable lead but by lap 3 Chris Wenzel in the 03 was on her bumper. A lap later Minchella let up just a little trying to get around a lapped car and Wenzel seized the opportunity to take the lead. Minchella wouldn’t give up that easy though. She drove back to be on Wenzel’s bumper until she was able to retake the lead on lap 7. Minchella drove away from Wenzel as she captured her 2nd win of the season. Wenzel had his best run of the season and finished 2nd. Chloe Wright held on for a 3rd place finish. Minchella was asked in victory lane how she was able to stay composed after losing the lead. Her answer was “I just wanted to win.”
Lightening Stocks flashed onto the track next. Alex Barden in the 27 and the 7 of Mike Radzuik brought the field to the green. Barden jumped to an early lead but Radzuik would drive around him on the outside to take the lead. Radzuik would drive away from the field taking a commanding lead. On lap 3 Radzuik had a straightaway lead over Barden. Matthew Gauffin in the 68 made a move on lap 4 to pass the 13k of Leon Keniston who was running 3rd and Barden who was running 2nd to take control of 2nd place. A lap latter Keniston would take 3rd place from Barden. Gauffin worked hard to reel Radzuik in and by lap 10 he had done so. It took Gauffin until lap 15 to pass Radzuik for the lead. The lone caution came out on lap 24 setting up a green white checkered finish. Gauffin would drive away from the pack and capture the win. Radzuik was pressured at the drop of the green by Keniston but Radzuik held on to finish 2nd. Hillary Renaud in the 88 who started 12th and got held up in track found herself restarting 4th. Renaud took full advantage of the restart to make a last lap pass for the 3rd spot. In a post race inspection, Radzuik was penalized giving Renaud 2nd and Keniston 3rd.
NEMA Lite’s took to the track for their portion of the Iron Mike Memorial race. Kevin Park in the 52 and the 19 of Richie Coy made up the front row. Park and Coy raced side by side thru turn 1 and 2 as a quick caution flag would fly for the 27 of Kevin Iannarelli who spun. Park and Coy led the field to the green again and this time Coy jumped out into the lead with the 35 of Randy Cabral right in tow. On Lap 6 Cabral took the lead. On lap 16 the caution would fly for Iannarelli as he had hard contact with the backstretch wall. Cabral would hold onto the top spot on the restart. Dan Cugini in the 51 would take 2nd on the restart but wouldn’t be there for long as the 12 of Jim Chambers would power by him on lap 20. Cabral would take the win followed by Chambers (2nd) and Cugini (3rd). Cabral was very appreciative to his father in victory lane for everything he has done to the car. Cabral noted that he is hoping he can double up and win the NEMA race later in the night.
Mini Stock feature was next on schedule for their 25 lap feature. The 93 of Tim Paquette and the 8 of Shelby Avery led the field to the green. Paquette took an early lead but on lap 3 would be passed by the 50x of Matt Kimball. Lap 4 would see the race slowed for the first caution of the event as the 00 of Bill Chaffee spun. Kimball resumed the lead on the restart; with Ben Williams in the 7 right behind him. The race was slowed on lap 7 as Avery spun into the grass on the backstretch. Kimball kept the lead on the restart but the caution flew again on lap 8 for the 97 of Ethan Marsh. On the restart Kimball took a commanding lead as the 43 of Alexander Pearl battled for the 2nd spot with Williams. By lap 10 Pearl, now running 2nd, was working on racing Kimball down. On lap 13 Kimball had a rear tire brake off causing him to make hard contact with the front stretch wall. Pearl assumed the lead after the accident. Pearl shot into the lead on the restart and never looked back as he held on for the win. Williams finished 2nd and Kevin McKnight, in the 76, finished 3rd. I was able to catch up with Pearl in victory lane to ask about next week’s Mini Stock Challenge. Pearl stated “(he was) a little nervous about how it could impact the championship battle with the expected increase in cars, but is looking forward to the challenge.”
Super Stocks raced onto the track next for their feature event. Mike McGoldrick in the 1 and the 37 of Justin Littlewood made up the front row. Before a lap could be completed the caution flag was thrown as the 71 of Eric Pomasko lost his driver side body panels due to contact from #11x Tyler Leary. McGoldrick and Justin Littlewood led the field to the green again. McGoldrick led lap 1 but Cole Littlewood in the 12 made the move for the top spot and took the lead on lap 2. Geoff Rollins in the 02 wasted no time to get around McGoldrick for the 2nd spot. Joel Monahan followed Rollins around McGoldrick. Cole Littlewood set a great pace and no one was able to do anything to get around him as he held on to capture his first Super Stock win of the season. Rollins in the 02 finished 2nd and Monahan, in the 03, finished 3rd. Cole Littlewood was clearly excited about capturing the win as he pumped his fist into the air after exiting the car. When asked how it felt to get back to victory lane Cole stated “it feels good, it’s been awhile.”
NEMA took to the track next for the 30 lap Iron Mike Memorial feature. Doug Cleveland in the 87 and Bethany Stoehr in the 5b started on the front row. Going into turn 1 Seth Carlson in the 47 dove to the bottom and passed both cars for the lead. On lap 4 Randy Cabral in the 74 brought out the caution as he came to rest at the top of turns 3 and 4. Carlson maintained the top spot on the restart and by lap 6 had a half a straightaway lead over the second place car of Avery Stoehr in the 39, and a full straightaway lead over Cleveland. On lap 7 Cabral had driven back to the top 3 and by lap 17 made the pass for 2nd place. On lap 20 the caution flew for the 30 of Paul Scally who appeared to lose his motor. On the restart Bethany Stoehr spun and brought the yellow back out. Carlson was pressured by Cabral on the restart but was able to pull away with the lead. Lap 22 saw the caution fly for the 31 of Ryan Bigelow. On the ensuing restart Bethany Stoehr would spin again coming to the green bringing out the caution. Carlson held off Cabral on the restart. Carlson pulled away from the field as he captured the win in the Iron Mike Memorial. Cabral finished 2nd and the 21 of Jim Chambers finished 3rd. Carlson was “really happy with this win” in victory lane.
The Thunder Stocks thundered onto the track next. Scott Vien in the 5 and the 10 of Jeff Staiti led the field to the green. Staiti and the 28 of Craig Chaffee got loose in turn one. Chaffee was able to use the grass to straighten it out but Staiti was on the outside and the 45x of Randy Rameau had nowhere to go making contact with Staiti. Staiti found himself on his side on the backstretch wall bringing out the caution and then the red flag as the safety crew would need time get Staiti off the wall. Staiti would be done for the night. On the restart Vien would have the 4 of Richard Vincent on his outside. Vien would roar to the lead as Vincent would be challenged by the 9 of James Nowakowski .Nowakowski slipped by Vincent for 2nd. A lap later Vincent faced another challenger for his spot in the 43 of Jason Kozacka. Kozacka completed the pass of Vincent for the 3rd spot. On lap 6 Kozacka drove around Nowakowski for 2nd. Lap 15 would bring out the lone caution for the 21 of Doug Mclean. Kozacka pressured Vien on the restart for the lead but Vien was up for the challenge as he held onto the top spot and Kozacka dropped in behind him in the 2nd spot. Vien held on for his first win of the season. Kozacka finished 2nd and Nowakowski finished 3rd. In a post-race inspection, Vien was penalized giving the top spot to Kozacka.
The last feature of the evening would be the Sportsman Modifieds. Cole Littlewood in the 5c and Paul Smith in the 45 brought the field to the green. Littlewood took the lead at the drop of the green. Joel Monahan in the 03 took 2nd and Brian Robie in the 25 took control of the 3rd spot. After starting 11th Todd Patnode in the 24 had driven up to 6th spot in 3 laps. On lap 6 Monahan passed Littlewood for the lead. Then on lap 11 Robie made the pass for the lead. Patnode made the pass for 3rd place on lap 20 and then took 2nd spot on lap 22. Robie had a large lead and Patnode needed a caution to have a chance at the win, but the caution never came allowing Robie to take the win. Patnode finished 2nd and Monahan finished 3rd. I caught up with Robie in victory lane to ask how happy he was the caution never came. Robie commented with “extremely happy.”
