The 72nd season of short track racing in Seekonk, Massachusetts began on time at 2:00pm with some special awards and introduction of three new members to the Wall of Fame and last years 2016 division track champions. I talked with General Manager Ed St. Germain and he told me that four time track champion #52 Dave Darling in the Pro Stock division had re-gained that special fire in his belly to re-gain the division championship after starting out slowly in 2016. Heats and time trials had Darling on top of the charts for the crafty veteran. The race car could have one, best appearing car of the racing card for the opener. The race started out in a chess match between #11 Ryan Vanasse and his good friend# 12 Bobby Pelland III with lap after lap of side by side fantastic action with Darling and the Master #30 Freddy Astle carving their way to the front of the low car count 14 car field. Noticeably missing from the field was great young talent and a former division champion # 8 Angelo Belsito and #46 Jake Vanada and #17 Kevin Folan. Last years champion #2 Tom Scully did a 360 spin for a caution and headed for the pits to check for damage and a tire. Scully returned quickly and salvaged some valuable points and a top ten on the lead lap. Darling drove his rocket ship to the three hole and on the re-start everyone in the stands knew it was just a matter of when he would tuck that nose under Vanasse and make it stick. Astle and #41 Dick Houlihan showed their driving skills for a battle behind the leaders for fourth and fifth. Excellent race to start the season and all three drivers displayed a lot of class at the on-track podium.
Next race will be Saturday May 13 6:00pm and only $14 for 4 great action filled features and great heat races.
