MRS Beech Ridge Twin 50s

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

The twin 50 lap features that the MRS has experimented with at certain tracks, has proved to be exciting for fans and drivers alike.
Saturday, August 1, 32 race teams signed in at the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, in Scarborough, ME and at the end of the night Woburn MA driver Anthony Nocella was awarded the overall victory by winning the first 50 lapper and finishing the night off with a hard-fought top 10 run in the second segment.
The 50 lap features seem to produce a flat out type of race with no time to sandbag or conserve equipment, and it seems to be popular with race fans.
The first 50 had Mike Holdridge of Madison CT jump into the lead from his pole position start and it looked like Holdridge had the field covered until Nocella took over the lead on lap 30 and never looked back as Jon McKennedy of Ipswich MA and Holdridge battled for the runner-up spot. McKennedy would prevail holding on to second with Holdridge third. Todd Szegedy and Woody Pitkat were fourth and fifth respectively.
Only one yellow flag slowed the action the first 50.
With an inverted start in the second 50 some of the heavy hitters had to work through traffic and it gave others a chance to shine, like when Rob Ricardi Jr of Easton, MA and Colbey Fournier, of Berkeley MA ran bumper to bumper in the early going. Jean Paul Cyr, substituting for the vacationing Rowan Pennink in the Gary Casella owned number 25, flexed his muscle and took over the lead only to be overhauled by the 2014, New Hampshire state champion, Todd Patnode.
Patnode was fast, but lost grip late in the race and surrendered the lead to a hard charging Richard Savary in the Alloy Wheels number 99. When it looked like it might be win number two for Savary, a lap 47 caution flag bunched up the field, giving points leader Woody Pitkat the opportunity he needed for his shot at victory.
With the white flag waving Pitkat saw an opening but the 99 and the 42 made contact going into turn three resulting in a Savary spin. Pitkat regained control and followed Todd Patnode, the new race leader across the line in second.
Race officials deemed both Savary and Pitkat created a yellow flag and would have to fall in the rear. That call would move Dennis Perry of Pawcatuck, CT who keeps getting stronger each race, into second-place and veteran Norm Wrenn of Nashua NH, third. Todd Annarummo, and Chris Pasteryak were fourth and fifth respectively.
Heat winners were 29, Jon McKennedy – 12, Todd Annarummo – 0, Mike Holdridge
Conci winner 53, Norm Wrenn
The VMRS will next visit the New London Waterford Speedbowl Saturday, August 8th for another 100 green flag lap thriller.
