It's All in for Brian Tagg at Thompson Speedway Motorspors Park in 2017

Posted by Wayne G. Barber & Photos Wayne G. Barber Collection

THOMPSON, CT - For nearly four decades the Tagg name has appeared on entry lists at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. John Tagg piloted one of the earliest versions of his Modified. His son, Tom, competed in the Sunoco Modifieds, a division he earned a championship in 1990. Currently, third generation driver, Brian, keeps the family tradition alive, piloting the No. 9 entry in the Thompson Speedway Motorsport Park Late Model Division.
The 2015 Late Model Champion, Brian, started his career behind the wheel of a Thompson Modified. There he achieved reasonable success, missing a 2009 championship due to a self-admitted driver error. After the division was disbanded in 2012, Tagg decided along with his team - AKA his family - that they would take a year off.
In 2014, when Tagg got back behind the wheel, he traveled with the American Canadian Tour, competing with some of the toughest Late Model competitors in the northeast.
With some experience under his belt, Tagg decided to return to his home track, Thompson, in 2015.  The results were more than the team could have imagined - a Divisional Champion, and one of few father-son combinations to ever win a championship at the famed 5/8-mile oval. It was Tom’s advice that anchored Brian during the final race, “Go out and do what you do all season. Don’t be too eager or defensive,” the 1990 Sunoco Modified Champion reminded his son.
Tagg’s title defense was not what he hoped to be.  Accidents and mechanical issues plagued the Oxford, MA driver.  He was able to rally in the second half of the season, though, visiting victory lane on August 24.  At season’s end, Tagg was able to rebound for a third place finish in championship standings. In spite of this, though, Brian and the entire Tagg family suffered a huge loss in 2016.

In 2017 Ray Parent #98 from Tiverton RI and Woody Pitkat #91 will be added to this all-star roster in the Late Models and Brian wil run selected ACT races also in 2017.  NH was a fantastic experience in 2016.

Shortly before the Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing, Brian’s biggest fan, his grandmother, passed away after a lengthy illness. The team’s matriarch was at every race, sitting in her usual spot in the grandstands to cheer on her grandson, Brian, and her other grandson, Troy, who occasionally races a Tour Type Modified.  When remembering his grandmother, Brian, recalled, “she was the biggest fan and critic. She would never want me to leave her disappointed.” This is what will motivate Tagg, as he and his family make final preparations to his Crazy Horse Late Model.
On track, Tagg hopes to finish the season with his third consecutive top three finish. Off the track, he and his wife, Kate, are expecting their first child. They’ve chosen not to have the gender revealed, but one thing is for certain - racing will be in that child’s blood.
Brian Tagg leads a strong field of drivers into the season opening, Icebreaker 2017, at a Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Friday, March 31 - Sunday, April 2. For more information about the event, or Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, please visit www.thompsonspeedway.com

Paul Arute joins the Late Model ranks at Stafford Springs Speedway, CT

posted by Wayne G. Barber

Paul Arute Moving up to Stafford Late Model Division

(Stafford Springs, CT)---After 3 years of full-time Limited Late Model competition, Tolland native Paul Arute will move to the Late Model Division for the 2017 season at Stafford Motor Speedway.  Arute notched a division high 5 wins and 12 top 5’s during his 2016 campaign in the Limited Late Model division.
"We’ve come a long way since my first season in the Limited Late Models,” explained Arute.  “I can’t thank my crew and all my supporters enough, a lot of people were instrumental to our success in 2016.  My crew chief Steve Johnson has stuck with me over the last 3 years and last year we hit our stride and parked it in victory lane 5 times.”
Arute is making the jump to a revitalized Late Model division in 2017.  Historically the Late Model division has been highly competitive and the 2017 season will be no different with a strong group of returning drivers and a few new drivers that will surely make an impact.
"The Late Model division will be tough,” continued Arute.  “You have veterans like Tom Fearn, Michael Bennett, and Tom Butler but also have the younger guys like Mike Wray, Josh Wood and Kevin Gambacorta who have come into their own the last few years.  The team is excited for the new challenge.”
Arute will be competing for Rookie of the Year against the other new driver in the field, Matt Vassar, who will pilot the number 69 car. Though just a rookie, Arute has his sights on getting to victory lane in 2017.
"Goals for the year would be to get to NAPA Victory Lane,” explained Arute. “That will be hard.  We have a steep learning curve but with the team and supporters we’ve pulled together we know we can get it done.”
The #82 Late Model team will have continued support from primary sponsor Supreme Industries based in Harwinton, CT.  Additional backing will come from associate sponsors Forward Financing, New England Race Fuels, and Big Haus Racing Products.
“I have to thank Supreme Industries of Harwinton, CT for their continued support of our race team, without them none of this is possible,” said Arute.  “Gavin and Nate Boucher of Supreme Industries joined us midway through the 2014 season and have stuck with me ever since.  We’ve had some fun along the way and that will continue in 2017.  If you’re in the market for land clearing, site work, or road building for any project, check them out at SupremeIndustries.com, they are the best in the business.”
The team also has a new associate sponsor on board for the 2017 season, Boston Based Alternative Small Business Lender, Forward Financing.
“Forward Financing has joined us for the new season,” explained Arute.  “Forward Financing supports small businesses by providing working capital in as little as one business day. I’m really excited to have the Forward team on board.  They’re a great company helping small businesses throughout the country and their whole group will be down to the track for the extra distance race May 12th.”
Arute is adamant to thank the long list of supporters of his racing career which started in the Wild Thing Kart Series and moved to the Limited Late Model division in the 2013 season.
“I have to thank my whole crew and everyone who’s supported me in my racing career,” explained Arute.  “I can’t thank everyone enough; Steve, Everett, Wendy, Rick and Mike Decarli, Tom, Rick Casagrande, Slick Phillips in my kart days, my brother David, and my parents have all helped me along the way.  We’re ready for the Sizzler."

New Hampshire Speedway to lose September Racing Date in 2018

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s September Sprint Cup weekends have been moved to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway effective 2018. Here’s what that means for the North East Motor Sports Museum.
The New Hampshire track is secure and will be in business with its July weekend for decades to come. Each track that has lost a date in recent years has found significant increases in ticket sales for the date that remains. I believe the same will happen at New Hampshire.
As for museum attendance, I have been to every auto racing museum that’s at a race track and I’ve seen them during race weekends. Not one of them get a marked increase in attendance when compared to non-race weekends. Because of that, the museum’s budget does not rely on race weekend ticket sales to meet expenses.
The North East Motor Sports Museum has a 90-year lease under the building we have erected. We have a home for the long term and will make the best of it. This museum will not fail. It will prosper.
The museum will open to paid members on June 10 and 11 and will open to the general public shortly thereafter.

CBYD Digs $1,811 To Win Late Model 50 at Stafford

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Stafford Speedway and 811 Call Before You Dig will partner to present the Late Model 50 on Friday, May 12th behind one of the strongest Late Model purses in recent memory.  The 50-lap special event will guarantee $1,811 for the winner and $10,341 in total purse.
“Stafford Speedway’s focus has always been and will continue to be the weekly racers,” explained Stafford General Manager Mark Arute.  “Each year we have increased the total purse on the Late Model 50 and this year, through our partnership with Derek Brown and Call Before You Dig, we are able to get the total purse over $10,000.”
CBYD is entering its 10th year of partnership with Stafford Speedway.  For the last 5 years CBYD has sponsored the 811 Challenge, an annual bonus of $811 for 5 drivers who are closest to 811 points on August 11th.  That tradition will continue in 2017, culminating on 8/11.  Additionally, the Call 811 team sponsored the August Whelen Modified Tour event in 2014 and 2015.
“As we’ve continued our relationship with Stafford Motor Speedway, we’ve always looked for new and innovative ways to be able to promote 811 as well offering new prizes for a wide variety of drivers,” explained Derek Brown, Vice President of Damage Prevention and Education at Call Before You Dig.  “We’ve been associated with the SK Modified® division for the past 7 seasons and we told Lisa and Mark that we were on board once again to do the contingency program but that we were also open to any new ideas they might have on how to distribute the bonus money.  They came up with the idea to sponsor the 50-lap Late Model race and we thought that would be an excellent way to continue to promote CBYD’s 811 number.  This race is early in the year and it’s great for us to be a part of the Late Model Revival!”
The Stafford Speedway Late Model division is seeing a resurgence to top form with new drivers and a strong group of veterans preparing to mix it up for the 2017 title.  Tom Fearn, Tom Butler, and Michael Bennett highlight the list of veterans returning for the 2017 season while Michael Wray, Josh Wood, and Joey Cipriano along with newcomers Paul Arute, Darrell Keane, and Matt Vassar represent a few of the young faces in the field.  With a weekly field of nearly 20 Late Models are expected, 2017 will be an exciting season in the Late Model ranks.
The $1,811 to win Call Before You Dig Late Model 50 on Friday May 12th adds to a growing list of special events for Stafford Speedway’s weekly divisions.
“Bigger events and more prize money for the weekly competitors, that is what we are striving for,” explained Stafford General Manager Mark Arute.  “We introduced the NAPA SK 5k a few years back and announced the new Dunleavy’s Modifiedz Night earlier this year.  Drivers have responded well to both events and we are working to make sure every weekly division at Stafford is put in the spotlight.”
Last year CBYD launched a new ticket management system for contractors and home owners alike.  The new system utilizes the latest technology to improve the efficiency and user friendliness.  CBYD still maintains a call center to take 811 phone calls, but the preferred contact method is through the www.cbyd.com website. Features of the site include a re-engineered ticket format, ability for mobile ticket entry for iPhone, tablets, or other mobile devices, the ability for the user to draw on a map showing the proposed work area, and a confirmation method that will be emailed to the user for documentation of their mark out request. Once a user has become registered, that unique user will have a username and password and the system will retain your data to pre-populate information and expedite any subsequent ticket requests in the future. Anyone who has registered for E-Tickets will have the ability to search for previous tickets. There are also many help tools to make the process as easy as possible. For more information, please visit www.cbyd.com.
