Ronnie Williams Repeats in SK Mods at Stafford Speedway

Posted by Wayne G.Barber

In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature, Marcello Rufrano took the lead at the green with Joey Cipriano second and Tyler Hines in third.  Andrew Molleur took fourth with Michael Gervais, Jr. in fifth.  Behind Gervais was a side by side duel between Keith Rocco and Todd Owen for sixth.  The caution came out with 10 laps complete for a spin by Shawn Thibeault in the middle of turns 1+2.
Rufrano took the lead on the restart with Owen all over his back bumper in second.  Rocco came up to third with Michael Christopher, Jr. and Cipriano side by side for fourth.  Stephen Kopcik was up to fifth with Gervais behind him in sixth.  Owen took the lead from Rufrano on lap-12 and Rocco followed him through to take second and drop Rufrano back to third in line.  Kopcik was now fourth with Gervais fifth and Cipriano sixth.  The caution came back out with 20 laps complete for Curt Brainard, who came to a stop in the middle of turns 3+4 with smoke pouring from his car.
Owen took the lead back under green with Rocco in second.  Rufrano and Kopcik were side by side for third with Gervais and Christopher side by side for fifth.  Rufrano got clear to third on lap-25 with Gervais and Kopcik now side by side for fourth with Owen still leading Rocco out front.  The caution came back out with 25 laps complete for spins in turn 1 by Matt Vassar and Thibeault.
The caution came right back out on the restart as Chase Dowling nearly spun and came to a stop at the pit road exit in turn 2.  Owen took the lead on the next restart with Rocco still in second.  Rufrano was third with Gervais and Kopcik side by side for fourth.  Cipriano spun and collected the car of Andrew Molleur to bring the caution back out with 26 laps complete.
Owen took the lead with Rocco and Kopcik behind him on the restart.  Rufrano slid back to fourth while Gervais and Dan Avery were side by side for fifth with Ronnie Williams up to seventh.  Mike Christopher spun coming out of turn 2 to bring the caution back out with 28 laps complete.
Troy Talman, Tyler Leary, and Tyler Hines all spun on the backstretch to bring the yellow right back out on the restart.  Owen again took the lead on the restart while Kopcik was able to take second from Rocco.  Rocco was third in line with Gervais and Rufrano side by side for fourth and Williams in sixth.  Williams took fifth on lap-31 as Rufrano slid back to sixth.  With 8 laps to go, the order was Owen, Kopcik, Rocco, Gervais, and Williams.  With Owen in the lead, Williams needed to be at least fourth to win the SK Modified® championship.
Williams was able to get to the inside of Gervais on lap-37 to take fourth and put himself in a championship clinching position.  Owen led Kopcik to the checkered flag to pick up his fourth win of the 2019 season.  Rocco finished third with Williams fourth and Gervais fifth.  Williams fourth place finish saw him tied with Owen in points but Williams had 5 wins to Owen’s 4 this season, which made him the 2019 SK Modified® track champion. Matt Galko to Make Whelen Modified Tour Debut in NAPA Fall Final

Posted by Wayne G. Barber & Photo by Stafford Speedway

(Stafford Springs, CT)---When the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour takes the green flag this weekend at Stafford Speedway for the NAPA Fall Final 150, Meriden, CT native and SK Modified® regular Matt Galko will look to realize a dream by making his NWMT debut.  Galko will be piloting the #41 Chevrolet owned by Susanne Lewis with Steve Mendoza serving as the crew chief.

“This is kind of a combo deal between Susanne Lewis and my crew chief Steve Mendoza,” said Galko.  “It’s a brand new car that they’ve been working on putting together.  I’ve known them for a while and I drove a couple times for Steve on the R.O.C. Tour two years ago so that’s how we got to know each other.  This has been a dream come true for me.  This has been something that my family and myself have worked for since we got started in the SK Lights.  The open modified shows are nice and all but the premier division that everyone wants to run is the Whelen Modified Tour.  I’ve had talks with some owners here and there over the past couple of years but nothing has worked out.  We’re going to have our challenges and growing pains as a brand new team, but it helps that we know the track and we’re hoping that everything will work out for us.”

There is no better track that Galko could have picked than Stafford to make his NWMT debut.  Galko is a two-time SK Light track champion (2010, 2011) and he has won a total of 10 races with 8 SK Light wins and 2 SK Modified® wins at the Connecticut half-mile.  Galko will be relying on his track knowledge to help overcome any learning curve he and the #41 team will face.

“We have to keep our expectations realistic because the Whelen Modified Tour is a whole different ballgame,” said Galko.  “First I want to qualify for the race, after that my goal is to finish on the lead lap.  If we could come out of the race with a top-15 finish or something like that, that would be really, really good for our first time out.  Pit strategy is always a big thing at Stafford and if you have the right strategy you could use that to your benefit.  Kyle Bonsignore won the Fall Final last year, which I think was a surprise to some people, and he was able to catch a lot of the guys off-cycle and had the freshest tires at the end of the race.”

Perhaps the biggest obstacle that Galko will have to overcome is his lack of experience in group qualifying.  In his career, Galko has only qualified through time trials once before and he says he will definitely be feeling some nerves as he prepares to make his qualifying laps in NWMT group qualifying at 2:30pm on Saturday.

“I’m feeling a lot of nerves right now more than excitement,” said Galko.  “I’m sure it’ll get a lot more exciting once we get to the track and start rolling.  I lack experience with group qualifying in the tour modifieds.  Everything I’ve run I’ve qualified through heat races.  I’ve time trialed one time at the Turkey Derby and the nerves I felt that day were unlike any I’ve ever experienced before.”

As Galko and the #41 team prepare for this weekend’s NAPA Fall Final 150, Galko is grateful to everyone who is helping him to realize his dream of making his first NWMT start.  They are also looking for any sponsors who would like to join the #41 team for the NAPA Fall Final.

“We have a lot of good equipment with this new team but we’re a little short on crew for pit road so I couldn’t do this without the help of all the crew members from our SK and Tour teams,” said Galko.  “It’s going to be a big team effort for us this weekend and I’m really looking forward to the race.  We’re funding this out of our pockets and the help of Steve Mendoza and Susanne Lewis.  Any marketing partners that would want to come on board with us would be greatly appreciated and would go a long way towards helping us out.”

Stafford Speedway 2019 Track Championship Scenarios

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Stafford Speedway has crowned Tom Fearn as the 2019 Late Model track champion but four more track championships are up for grabs.  The SK Modified®, SK Light Modified, Limited Late Model, and Street Stock division titles will all be decided in the season ending NAPA Fall Final Weekend, set for September 28 & 29.

Stafford’s premier SK Modified® division sees defending track champion Ronnie Williams and the #50 Les’s Auto Center team leading the standings by 6 points over Todd Owen and the #81 Cooker Construction team.  Keith Rocco and the #88 Wheelers Auto team are third in the standings, 16 points behind, with Michael Gervais, Jr. and the #33 Gervais Brothers Roofing team 4th, 38 points behind.

If Williams finishes in the top-4, he will clinch the championship no matter where the other three contenders finish.  If Williams doesn’t finish in the top-4, he cannot finish any more than 3 positions behind Owen, 7 positions behind Rocco, or 19 positions behind Gervais.  For Owen to claim the championship, he will have to finish at least 4 positions in front of Williams while finishing no more than 4 positions behind Rocco or 16 positions behind Gervais.  For Rocco to win the championship, he will need to finish at least 8 positions in front of Williams and at least 5 positions in front of Owen and no more than 11 positions behind Gervais.  Gervais is the long shot in the title race but he can still claim the title by finishing at least 20 positions in front of Williams, 17 positions in front of Owen, and 12 positions in front of Rocco.

Teddy Hodgdon and the #55 Montanari Fuel team lead the SK Light standings by 10 points over Steven Chapman and the #14 Chapman Apartment Homes team with Alexander Pearl and the #7 Darling Auto Parts team third in the points, 24 behind.

If Hodgdon records a top-6 finish, he will clinch the championship no matter where Chapman and Pearl finish.  If Hodgdon is outside the top-6, he must finish no more than 5 positions behind Chapman and no more than 12 positions behind Pearl.  For Chapman to win the title, he will have to finish at least 6 positions in front of Hodgdon and no more than 5 positions behind Pearl.  For Pearl to claim the title, he will have to finish at least 13 positions in front of Hodgdon and at least 7 positions in front of Chapman.
Stafford’s Limited Late Model division has seen a see-saw title fight between defending Limited Late Model champion Jeremy Lavoie and the #6 L & S Equipment team and Matt Clement and the #59 Aquatic Wildlife team.  The two drivers are separated by 8 points in the standings heading into the NAPA Fall Final.  If Lavoie records a top-4 finish, he will win a second consecutive title no matter where Clement finishes.  Otherwise, Lavoie must not finish any more than 3 positions behind Clement to win the title.  Clement has to finish at least 4 positions in front of Lavoie to claim the championship.

Stafford’s Street Stock division has Zack Robinson and the #89 First Class Automotive, LLC. team leading the standings by 30 points over Meghan Fuller and the #2 Propane Plus team with defending Street Stock champion George Bessette, Jr. and the #39 Lasco Roofing & Sheet Metal team third in the standings, 42 points behind.  If Robinson records a top-15 finish at the Fall Final, he will clinch the championship.  If Fuller wins the race, she will have to be at least 15 positions in front of Robinson to claim the title.  If Fuller doesn’t win, she must be at least 14 positions in front of Robinson and no more than 5 positions behind Bessette if he wins the race and no more than 6 spots behind Bessette if he doesn’t win the race.  For Bessette to win the title, he will have to finish at least 21 spots in front of Robinson if he wins or finishes second and at least 6 positions in front of Fuller to win the title.  If Bessette doesn’t win or finish second, he will have to finish at least 22 spots in front of Robinson and 7 positions in front of Fuller to win a second consecutive title.

The NAPA Fall Final Weekend will kick off on Saturday, September 28 with practice sessions for the Whelen Modified Tour, Stafford’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions and the Vintage All Stars from 10:00am to 2:15pm.  The Whelen Modified Tour will take to the track for group qualifying at 2:30pm with Stafford’s NWAAS divisions and Vintage All Stars qualifying to follow.  Feature events for the Street Stocks, Limited Late Models, Vintage All Stars and Ladies Challenge will conclude Saturday’s festivities.

The NAPA Fall Final Weekend continues on Sunday, September 29 with the popular NAPA Pit Party, a meet and greet with drivers and teams, taking place from 11:00am to noon.  Feature racing will begin at 1:00pm with the SK Modifieds® first on track followed by the Late Models, SK Lights, and the Whelen Modified Tour.

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action on Friday, September 13 with the First Responders Friday / Final Friday Night Shoot-Out program that paid tribute to Ambulance, EMS, Fire, Police, and all First Responder personnel.  Scoring feature wins on the night were Stephen Kopcik in the SK Modified® feature, Cliff Saunders in the Late Model feature, Teddy Hodgdon in the SK Light feature, Jeremy Lavoie in the Limited Late Model feature, and Dave Secore in the Street Stock feature.  Tom Fearn was officially crowned as the 2019 Late Model track champion.
In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature event, Marcello Rufrano took the lead at the drop of the green with Glen Reen taking second, Joey Cipriano third, and Stephen Kopcik fourth.  Tyler Leary was sliding backwards after starting from pole position and he slotted into line in ninth place.
Reen was challenging Rufrano for the race lead on lap-6 with Kopcik nearly going 3-wide for the lead on lap-7.  Ronnie Williams was up to fourth behind the lead trio of cars with Todd Owen fifth and Michael Christopher, Jr. in sixth.  Reen took the lead from Rufrano on lap-9 with Kopcik on his inside.  Reen bounced off the backstretch wall on lap-11 but kept on going and he only fell back to fourth place as Rufrano took second and Williams moved into third while Kopcik was in the lead.
Kopcik began to slightly pull away from Rufrano in second with Williams, Reen, Owen, and Christopher still making up the top-6.  The caution came out with 18 laps complete for a spin in turn 2 by Reen.
Kopcik took the lead back under green with Rufrano in second.  Williams and Owen were side by side for third with Dan Avery in fifth.  Michael Gervais, Jr. was up to sixth with Keith Rocco in seventh.  Kyle Armstrong brought the caution out with 23 laps complete with a spin coming out of turn 4.
Kopcik took the lead once again on the restart with Williams moving into second.  Owen was third in line but Rufrano bounced off the backstretch wall and spun to bring the caution back out with 25 laps complete.
Kopcik was the leader on the restart with Owen and Williams going side by side for second.  Owen got clear to second on lap-28 while Rocco was up to fourth and Gervais was fifth in line.  Spins by Fran Siana, Patrick Yuhas, Armstrong, and Nick Giardina in turn 1 brought the caution back out with 30 laps complete.
Kopcik took the lead on the restart with Owen slotting into second.  Williams and Rocco were sie by side for third with Gervais in fifth.  Reen was sixth and he took fifth from Gervais on lap-33.  Owen was hounding Kopick for the lead while Williams and Rocco were still side by side for third place with 4 laps to go.
Williams was able to finally get clear of Rocco on lap-38 while Owen was still looking high and low for a way around Kopcik.  Kopcik led Owen to the checkered flag to pick up his second win of the 2019 season.  Williams finished third with Rocco and Gervais rounding out the top-5.
In the 30-lap Late Model feature event, Al Saunders took the lead at the green with Kevin Gambacorta quickly working his way up to second.  Ryan Fearn slotted into third with Tyler Leary up to fourth and Tom Fearn was up to fifth with 5 laps complete.
Tom Fearn got around Leary to move into fourth while Gambacorta was applying heavy pressure to Al Saundes for the race lead.  Tom Fearn took third from Ryan Fearn on lap-11 while Al Saunders was able to fend off the challenges of Gambacorta to maintain the race lead.  Gambacorta made a move to the outside of Saunders on lap-12 but was unable to make the pass and in the process Tom Fearn took second place.  The caution came out with 14 laps complete for spins in turn 1 by Andy Marchese, Paul Arute, and Michael Bennett.
Al Saunders took the lead back under green while Gambacorta was side by side with Tom Fearn for second.  Cliff Saunders was up to fourth with Ryan Fearn in fifth.  Cliff Saunders took third from Tom Fearn on lap-16 with Ryan and Tom Fearn now side by side for fourth place.  Ryan Fearn took fourth from Tom Fearn on lap-18 with a pass coming out of turn 4 while Gambcorta was still looking for a way to get around Al Saunders.  Gambacorta made the pass on lap-20 going down the backstretch to take over the race lead.  Cliff Saunders followed Gambacorta’s tire tracks and took second to drop his brother Al back to third with Ryan and Tom Fearn fourth and fifth.  The caution came out with 22 laps complete for a spin by Mike Mordino in turn 3.
Gambacorta took the lead back under green with Al Saunders in second.  Tom Fearn was third with Ryan Fearn fourth and Michael B

Gambacorta took the lead back under green with Al Saunders in second.  Tom Fearn was third with Ryan Fearn fourth and Michael Bennett was back up to fifth after his early race misfortune.  Tom Fearn took second from Al Saunders on lap-24.  Arute and Dave Wray both spun going into turn 3 to bring the caution out  with 25 laps complete.

Gambacorta took the lead on the restart but his car took a spin through the grass on the backstretch before sliding into the turn 3 wall to bring the caution flag right back out.  Tom Fearn was sent to the rear of the field for making contact with Gambacorta.

Al Saunders and Michael Bennett went side by side for the lead on the restart with Cliff Saunders getting sideways before slotting into third.  Cliff Saunders got to the inside of both Al Saunders and Bennett on lap-27 to move into the race lead but the caution came out for a spin in turn 4 by Richard Ciriello, nullifying the move and putting Al Saunders and Bennett back out front for the restart.

Cliff Saunders went 3-wide to take the lead on the restart with Ed Ricard nearly taking second before slotting back into third place.  Bennett was back to fourth with John Blake up to fifth.   The fast and furious action was slowed by the caution the flew with 28 laps complete for a spin by Ciriello that collected the car of Marchese.

Cliff Saunders took the lead on the restart with Bennett and Al Saunders side by side for second.  Bennett took second from Al Saunders on the final lap but he couldn’t get close enough to make a bid for the lead as Cliff Saunders took his second win of the 2019 season.  Ryan Fearn finished third with Al Saunders and Ed Ricard rounding out the top-5.  Tom Fearn was crowned as the 2019 Late Model track champion with his seventh place finish.  Andrew Durand brought the caution out with a spin with 9 laps complete.

Lavoie took the lead back under green with Provost right behind him in second.  Clement was still third in line while Fearn came up to fourth and Patnode took fifth.  Fearn got loose on lap-15 and slid back to sixth as Patnode moved up to fourth and David Tefft took fifth while Lavoie was still in command with Provost and Clement giving chase.
Lavoie led Provost and Clement to the checkered flag to pick up his fifth win of the 2019 season.  Patnode finished fourth with Tefft rounding out the top-5.
In the 20-lap SK Light Modified feature, Nick Anglace took the lead at the green but Jonathan Puleo shot into the lead on lap-2.  Teddy Hodgdon was up to third with Mark Bakaj fourth and Chris Matthews in fifth.  Anglace slid back to sixth place on lap-3, moving Bakaj into third, Matthews into fourth and Noah Korner in fifth.  The caution came out with 6 laps complete for a spin by Charlie McDougall on the frontstretch.
Hodgdon took the lead on the restart with Puleo in second.  Matthews was third in line Anglace fourth and Bakaj in fifth.  Korner spun in turn 2 and collected several other cars including Joey Ferrigno and Chris Bagnall to bring the caution back out with 10 laps complete.
Hodgdon took the lead on the restart with Puleo in second, Matthews third, and Bakaj fourth.  The action was hotting up with 5 laps to go as Anglace and Alexander Pearl were side by side for fifth and Steven Chapman and Amanda West were side by side for seventh place.
Hodgdon was starting to pull away from Puleo, Matthews, and Bakaj while Pearl took fifth.  Hodgdon led Puleo to  the checkered flag to pick up his fourth win of the 2019 season.  Matthews finished third with Bakaj and Pearl rounding out the top-5.

In the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature event, Gary Patnode took the lead at the drop of the green and he led the first lap but he gave way to Jeremy Lavoie on lap-2.  Matt Clement quickly moved into second with Duane Provost taking third.  Patnode fell back to a side by side battle with Alexandra Fearn for fourth place.  Fearn took fourth on lap-5 to drop Patnode back to fifth in line.

In the 20-lap Street Stock feature event, Marvin Minkler took the early race lead but he lost the lead to Tyler Trott on lap-2.  Dave Secore moved into second with Meghan Fuller taking third as Minkler fell back to fourth in line, just in front of Adrien Paradis, III.  Minkler spun coming out of turn 4 to bring the caution out with 4 laps complete.

Trott and Secore ran side by side on the restart with Secore taking the lead at the line.  Fuller took to the outside line to get by Trott for second place on lap-6 with George Bessette, Jr. and Travis Hydar side by side for fourth place behind the lead trio of Secore, Fuller, and Trott.
Bessette made a move to take over third from Trott on lap-8 and Hydar followed him through to take fourth and drop Trott back to fifth place.  Fuller was applying heavy pressure on Secore for the race lead but Secore was able to maintain the lead.
With 5 laps to go, Secore was still out front with Fuller, Bessette, Hydar, and Trott lined up behind him.  Fuller was looking high and low for a way to get around Secore but Secore was able to keep his car out front.  Fuller made one final effort on the last lap but Secore was to strong to be overtaken and he scored his first win of the 2019 season.  Hydar finished third with Bessette and Trott rounding out the top-5.
