Many ACT Tour Regulars Starting Season Early at Hickory Motor Speedway

Posted by Wayne G. Barber & Photos by Wayne G. Barber

Waterbury, VT — The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) is closing in on its first-ever visit to North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3. Although the Hickory 125 and Easter Bunny 125 do not count for points, many drivers planning an ACT championship run in 2021 have decided to start their season early at the 0.363-mile oval.

After a cold, snowy New England winter, a trip to North Carolina is exactly what the racing doctor ordered. Racers such as Ben Rowe, Tom Carey III, Stephen Donahue, and Reilly Lanphear are jumping at the chance to compete at the “Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars”. They’ll then have two weeks to prepare for the Northeast Classic at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, April 17, which opens the 12-event ACT Late Model Tour schedule.

“It’s a bucket list track, for sure,” Salem, MA’s Tom Carey III said of the trip to Hickory. “I lived down in North Carolina all through high school, and as soon as I got my driver’s license, we used to go watch races there back in the Hooter’s Pro Cup days. It was always a pretty cool place to go into when you walk up to get into the grandstands and they’ve got all the past champions written on the walls. It’s a pretty humbling experience to see names like Ned Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, and Ralph Earnhardt. As a driver, it’s something that I never thought I would get a chance to do, and I’m just very humbled and grateful for the opportunity.”

Turner, ME’s Rowe, a multi-time Pro All Stars Series (PASS) champion who is also gunning for the ACT title this year, might be one the favorites based on history. He has the most experience at Hickory of any driver on the ACT entry lists thanks to the track’s place on the PASS National Championship schedule. Rowe won the 2009 and 2016 editions of the Easter Bunny 150.

Rowe and recent Snowflake 100 winner Jake Johnson are planning doubleheader double-duty next weekend. On each night, they’ll compete in both the PASS Easter Bunny 150 and the ACT event. PASS winner Mike Hopkins will now do double-duty on Saturday, too. It will mean a busy day for all, but they certainly have the talent and temperament to make it happen.

Duxbury, VT’s Reilly Lanphear is the only other ACT entrant with significant experience at Hickory Motor Speedway. Lanphear, who’s entering her fourth season with ACT, ran a Super Late Model at the historic track in 2018 and finished seventh in her first start. She and her sister Peyton are both making the trip for Easter weekend, with Reilly running a special #45NC Rich Bickle throwback paint scheme.

For everyone else, the practice sessions will be the first time they tackle Hickory. With the talented list of drivers making the haul to North Carolina, though, they figure to quickly get up to speed.

Carey is looking to build on a strong finish to his rookie ACT season. The third-generation racer grabbed his first ACT podium finish at Maine’s Oxford Plains Speedway in the season finale — a track that bears similarities to its Southern counterpart. He also had a runner-up in a 50-lap event at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway, giving him confidence heading into 2021.

“We’ll have the same goal as always: go out there and do the best we can, and let the cards fall where they fall,” Carey said. “Obviously, the goal is always to go out there and win. Hopefully we can keep some of our momentum rolling from last year. We’ve got a couple of good race cars here, nice pieces, and I’m just really looking forward to getting the season going — especially starting it off down in Hickory.”

The 2020 ACT Rookie of the Year, North Dartmouth, MA’s Derek Gluchacki, is also starting his year down South. He’s gearing up to chase both the 2021 ACT title and the inaugural New England Late Model Challenge Cup. Graniteville, VT’s Stephen Donahue is doing the same, making the Hickory doubleheader an important tune-up session for both.

Lancaster, NH’s Shawn Swallow, the 2020 Riverside Speedway champion, is going to Hickory in preparation for his first full ACT Late Model Tour champion. West Burke, VT’s Jesse Switser, meanwhile, is tuning up for year #2 on the series. East Montpelier, VT’s Joey Laquerre, the 77-year-old ageless veteran, is running the second Hickory event and will chase the 12-race Tour schedule beginning at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

ACT fans can also watch 2020 runner-up D.J. Shaw on the PASS side of the program. Although Shaw is sticking to single-duty at Hickory, he’ll be pulling double-duty many times this year as he returns to the CS Motorsports #04VT team for another ACT title run.

The American-Canadian Tour and Pro All Stars Series travel to North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway on Friday, April 2 and Tuesday, April 3.  Friday’s program will feature the ACT Hickory 125 and the 2020 PASS Easter Bunny 150. Saturday, is the ACT Easter Bunny 125 and 2021 PASS Easter Bunny 150. Post time each day is 5:15pm.

Grandstand admission tickets are available at the gate. Speed51.TV also is offering a live stream of the doubleheader. The pay-per-view is $24.99 for one night or $39.99 for both nights. Sign up for the broadcast at www.speed51.tv/products/ppv-easter-bunny-weekend-pass.

The 15th and 16th Annual Easter Bunny 150s will both take place on in Easter weekend, 2021. This year's Easter Bunny 150 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now move to Friday, April 2, 2021, while the 2021 edition of the event will be the following day, Saturday, April 3. Both races will pay $5,000 to win and will be part of the reimagined 2021 PASS National Championship Series.

"This year has definitely thrown promoters across the country a lot of curveballs, but we've managed to adjust and make the most of it," said PASS President Tom Mayberry. "With today's announcement Super Late Model racers can be assured that the Easter Bunny will return in a big way in 2021. With the possibility to win $10,000, we hope we can bring the best racers out to Hickory as they start their run for the PASS National Championship."

More details will be coming soon including a complete weekend schedule and support division details for the 2021 Easter Bunny weekend at Hickory Motor Speedway. Modified Roar Returns to Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park at the Icebreaker

Posted by Wayne G. Barber  Photo by Wayne G. Barber

Sunoco Modifieds, SK Light Modifieds, Open Modifieds Back for Another Year

Waterbury, VT -- When Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park comes alive for the Icebreaker April 10-11, the roar of Modified engines will once again hit the high-banks. The Sunoco Modifieds and SK Light Modifieds, Thompson’s two local open-wheel divisions, are back for another year and will compete at all six events during the 2021 season.

Each division provides a mix of veterans, rising stars and newcomers, but the Sunoco Modifieds have long been dominated by those with the most experience. If anyone is going to visit Victory Lane, they will have to knock-off eight-time Thompson champion Keith Rocco first. The Connecticut native and former NASCAR National Champion (2010) has the most titles in track history and sits inside the top-five in the track’s all-time wins list.

Rocco completed a clean sweep of the races held at the Connecticut oval in 2020 and is the favorite heading into a new year. Rocco has the last four titles, while Woody Pitkat, NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece and the late Ted Christopher are the only other champions in the last decade.

However, there will be a strong contingent of drivers looking to take Rocco off the throne. The leaders of that list include Todd Owen and Troy Talman. Both drivers have previous victories at Thompson, and Owen has been Rocco’s toughest competitor over the last few years. Owen went to Victory Lane in the 2019 World Series and has experience competing with Rocco at a high-level at multiple tracks in the same division.

“Keith is a great competitor and definitely the one you want to beat on the track,” Owen said. “I have a lot of respect for him both as a racer and as a person. I can’t wait to battle him at Thompson, Stafford, and anywhere else we race against each other this year.”

Talman, who scored his first career Sunoco Modified Thompson win in 2017, has put his focus on competing at Thompson this season with his family-owned team. Early Sunoco Modified entries for the season also include former winner Danny Cates, Jonathan Puleo, Noah Korner and others. A strong field is expected to open the season as part of Icebreaker Saturday on April 10 with a 30-lap feature. Throughout the season, some of the top modified drivers from the region will compete in the competitive class.

As part of the Sunday, April 11 race day, the SK Light Modifieds kick-off their season with a 25-lap feature. Last year, it was John O’Sullivan and Josh Carey who went to Victory Lane, with Carey’s victory marking his first career. The SK Light Modified division is known for giving drivers a step-ladder to get to the Sunoco Modifieds, but also as a place where veterans can compete at a more affordable cost.

O’Sullivan is one of the early drivers committing to race, while he’s joined by names like Steve Kenneway, Glenn Korner, George Bessette Jr. and Albert “Bert” Ouellette. Bessette is a former Street Stock champion at Stafford Motor Speedway, who made the jump to full-time SK Light action in 2020. Watch closely for Paul “Buddy” Charette, who finished second in the World Series feature in 2020 and is looking forward to returning to compete at a high level. Charette is a former Late Model competitor at Thompson, and the switch to the Modifieds brought him to New Smyrna Speedway this past February to compete in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. He seems primed and ready to go.

“We are very lucky to have teamed up with some amazing sponsors to run the SK Light Modified division at Thompson with the Polar Beverages No. 28,” Charette said. “Thompson Speedway has always been one of our favorite tracks. We’re excited to have partnered with Complete Chassis Solutions to create a strong team with the goal of winning races.”

Registration for Thompson local divisions is open and will remain open throughout the season. Registration forms can be found at thompsonspeedway.com/competitor-info-0.

Marked as the third Modified race of the weekend, the Outlaw Open Modified Series debuts at the Icebreaker with a 125-lap, $10,000 to win event on Sunday, April 11. The entry list for the big-money race includes the top stars in asphalt Modified racing including six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby and fellow tour title-holders Ron Silk and Bobby Santos III. Two-time Stafford Motor Speedway SK Modified champion Ronnie Williams, reigning World Series Bud Modified Open winner Mike Christopher Jr., Matt Swanson, Patrick Emerling, Eric Goodale, Chris Pasteryak, Jon McKennedy and more are also on the list. Fans won’t want to miss some of the top talent in the region competing to close out the opener of the New England racing season.

The Outlaw Open Modified Series season will also include four Wednesday night races on June 16, July 7, August 11 and September 15, worth $5,000 to the winner. The return of the Thompson 300, worth $20,000-to-win, will be part of the annual World Series of Racing on October 8-10.

Thompson Speedway opens its 82nd season with the annual Icebreaker on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11. A total of 10 divisions will compete across two days of racing. Sunday’s card features the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series with qualifying going green at 1:15pm. There’s also a 40-lap ACT-type Late Model shootout plus the Limited Sportsman and SK Light Modifieds.

Saturday’s six-division card is highlighted by the season-opening Thompson 75 for the PASS North Super Late Models. They’re joined by the Sunoco Modifieds, NEMA LITES Midgets, EXIT Realty Pro Truck Challenge, Mini Stocks, and an 8-Cylinder Street Stock Open with a 1:00pm post time. An optional Test N’ Tune practice day is slated for Friday, April 9 with all Icebreaker divisions welcome.

Adult general admission is $30 for Saturday and $35 for Sunday. Kids ages 12 and under are $10 each day. Advance tickets are available at https://happsnow.com/event/Thompson-Speedway-Motorsports-Park-YHPQ. Grandstand attendance is limited to 50% of capacity per Connecticut COVID-19 guidelines. Pit passes will be sold at the track.

Tyler Leary Focusing on SK Modified® Effort at Stafford

 Posted by Wayne G. Barber

(Stafford Springs, CT)---Tyler Leary heads into the 2021 season at Stafford Motor Speedway for what will be his 6th full-time season at the Connecticut half-mile.  Leary came to Stafford in 2016 as a Late Model driver and for the past 2 seasons he has pulled double duty, racing in both the premier SK Modified® division as well as the Late Model division.  For the 2021 season, Leary will forgo racing in the Late Model division to focus solely on his #1 Amherst Trucking SK Modified® car.

“It’s going to be beneficial for sure,” said Leary.  “Instead of worrying about 2 cars we can focus on 1 and I feel like that will make it easier on myself and the team.  I’m a little disappointed I won’t be racing the Late Model this season, especially with how the Late Model field is shaping up for this year.  We’ve pretty much sold off all of our Late Model stuff so I would have to drive a car for someone if I were going to race a Late Model this season.  There would have to be some negotiating but I wouldn’t say no if somebody were to give me a call about driving a Late Model.  I’m excited to get back on track and pick up where we left off last season in the SK division.”

Where Leary and the #1 left off in 2020 was their very first top-5 finish in the final SK Modified® race of the season.  Following their career best finish, Leary and his crew have been busy this winter working on the car.

“That top-5 finish gave us a good boost for the winter,” said Leary.  “We struggled a little last year and it wasn’t just the car, obviously the driver struggled as well.  The SK’s are the toughest division around and competing with all those guys weekly it’s easy to get down on yourself and it’s sometimes hard to find positives.  I feel like we closed last year out strong and with Todd Owen and Butch Shea and all the guys at Chassis Pro we’ve gone all through the car with new front and rear clips as well as a fresh motor from Don Wood at R.A.D. Auto Machine.  I’m looking forward to the new season and I think we’ll have a good head start come Spring Sizzler time.”

Since moving to the SK Modified® division, Leary has found it hard to replicate the success he has enjoyed behind the wheel of a Late Model.  Leary is a former Monadnock track champion and he won nearly 20 races at Monadnock to go along with 4 Late Model wins at Stafford.  But through 33 races in his first 2 seasons of SK Modified® competition at Stafford, Leary has only managed 1 top-5 and 3 top-10 finishes.  His goal for the 2021 season is to repeat his performance from the final race of the 2020 season where he ran in the top-3 for much of the race before finishing fifth.

“My goal for this season is to run in the top-10 on a weekly basis,” said Leary.  “The SK division is no joke.  It’s the best of the best with the best equipment and the best drivers.  I think some people might think that we’re just saying that when we talk about the SK division but I’m not just saying that.  It’s the toughest division in the Northeast.  You can take other drivers from other parts of the country and stick them in the SK division and they can’t do anything.  Obviously everyone’s goal is to win races, we don’t come to the track to finish second, third, or fourth, but I try to humble myself and have a modest mindset.  I’d like to prove to myself I can run in the top-5 every week with guys like Todd Owen, Keith Rocco, and Ronnie Williams.  The last 2 years have been a big learning curve for me but I want to be done with the learning curve this year and go out there and race.”

Helping Leary to achieve his goal of being a consistent presence in the top-5 and top-10 will be Todd Owen and Butch Shea from Chassis Pro.

“It’s absolutely beneficial to be working with Todd and Butch and everyone at Chassis Pro,” said Leary.  “Those guys work their tails off and the cars are always in tip-top shape.  Having the knowledge and experience that Todd and Butch have is key and that saves me from having to learn that because the cars have that their knowledge and experience built into them.”

Leary has found the SK Modified® division to be a tough nut to crack and he expects the 2021 season to be no different in terms of the difficulty level.

“The SK Modified® division gets tougher and tougher every year,” said Leary.  “There’s always new drivers and kids making the move up to the SK’s.  With last year being a short season, I know some drivers lost some sponsorship but I think everyone has recuperated in the off season and I think you’re going to see massive car counts at Stafford this year.  We have to thank the Arutes for believing in the teams and the race fans and showing everyone around the country how to do things.  Stafford is second to none and everyone knows that.”

Leary has a host of returning sponsors as well as a new sponsor for his #1 car this season.

“Thanks to Chassis Pro and Todd Owen, Amherst Trucking, Kix 100.9FM, we’re going to be running an ad on the radio this year so that will be big for all our other sponsors, Raynor Garage Doors, Valley Recycling, Mass Wheel Works, Lash Co. Tree Service, SDL Home Improvement, Tom’s Hot Dogs, and we have a new sponsor this season with Smiarowski Farms in Hatfield.  We couldn’t do what we do and have the equipment that we do without everyone’s support to a big thanks to everyone for their support.”

The 2021 SK Modified® season kicks off at Stafford with a double-header of feature events on Saturday, April 24 as part of NAPA Auto Parts Opening Day festivities and Sunday, April 25 with the 49th Annual NAPA Spring Sizzler®.  Tickets for these 2 events are available and on sale now at www.staffordspeedway.com and fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets now before capacity limits are reached.

Event Schedule Announced for Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park 47th Icebreaker

Posted by Wayne G. Barber &Photo by Wayne G.Barber

Waterbury, VT — The American-Canadian Tour (ACT) and Pro All Stars Series (PASS) have announced the schedule of events and ticketing information for the 47th Icebreaker at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 10 and 11. The 10-division card is highlighted by the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Thompson Outlaw Open Modified Series plus other top local and regional classes.

In a shift from previous years, all 10 of the divisions competing on Icebreaker weekend will have a “one-day” format. Six divisions have their qualifying and features on Saturday, April 10 with the Icebreaker 125 and remaining divisions set for Sunday, April 11. While teams may attend the Friday Test N’ Tune and other practice opportunities during the weekend, they can also practice, qualify, and race in a single day if they choose.

The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models, EXIT Realty Pro Truck Challenge, Sunoco Modifieds, 8-Cylinder Street Stock Open, NEMA Lite Midgets, and Mini Stocks will qualify and race on Saturday, April 10. The Outlaw Open Modified Series, Late Models, Limited Sportsmen, and SK Light Modifieds are slated for Sunday, April 11. Separate general admission tickets will be sold for each day.

Post time is 1:00pm for Saturday’s card and 1:15pm on Sunday. The optional Test N’ Tune on Friday, April 9 goes from 11:00am to 5:00pm. All local and state health and safety mandates will be in effect throughout the weekend.

“We think this schedule format is in everyone’s best interests,” ACT managing partner Cris Michaud said. “The one-day race format accommodates teams have other things going on in their lives and simply aren’t able to make it to the track for an entire weekend. Fans also won’t have to buy a ticket for both days if they can only attend one of them. It gives people more flexibility so they can enjoy as much racing as they want.”

“This format is a significant money-saver for teams,” PASS president Tom Mayberry added. “With qualifying and features on the same day, that’s one fewer night of hotels and other expenses that traveling teams have to pay for. Those costs can add up fast, and we don’t want teams to burn through a big chunk of their budget at the first race. It sets them up so they can potentially go to more races throughout the year.”

Adult admission for the Icebreaker is $30 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday. Kids ages 12 and under are $10 both days. Grandstand attendance is currently limited to 25% of capacity per the latest Connecticut state guidelines. ACT and PASS are monitoring the guidelines for any potential updates before race weekend. Advance ticket sales will begin by week’s end. Visit www.thompsonspeedway.com/reservations to reserve a camping spot.

With more than a month remaining before the Icebreaker 125, the entry list is already full of the top names in tour-type Modified racing. It’s shaping up as a big-time start to the six-event series that includes the return of the Thompson 300 on October 9-10.

Former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champions Doug Coby, Bobby Santos III, and Ronnie Silk have officially committed to chase the $10,000 top prize. So have former Modified Racing Series champions Jon McKennedy, Anthony Nocella, and Chris Pasteryak. Other notable drivers on the entry list include Keith Rocco, Eric Goodale, Richard Savary, and Ronnie Williams.

The PASS Super Late Models headline the Saturday program with a 75-lap main event. PASS has been a part of every Icebreaker since 2016. This year’s event is the opener of both the PASS North and Northern Series championships. The NEMA Lite Midgets and EXIT Realty Pro Trucks are returning for another Icebreaker while the $1,000-to-win Street Stock Open was recently added after a wildly successful outing at the most recent World Series of Speedway Racing.

ACT and PASS officials have also added bonus laps for many of the local divisions. The Late Models will run a 40-lap feature on Sunday while the Sunoco Modifieds go 30 laps on Saturday. Both the Limited Sportsmen and SK Light Modifieds have 25-lap Sunday features with the 4-cylinder Mini Stocks slated for 20 laps as part of the Saturday card. The Late Model feature is the first event in the ACT New England Late Model Challenge Cup, a region-wide series for weekly teams at eligible tracks.

The Icebreaker 125 and Thompson 300 entry forms, along with the rules for the Outlaw Open Modified Series, are available at www.acttour.com/outlaw-open-modifieds. The early-entry deadlines for the Icebreaker is March 15. Information about the local division and Open Street Stock rules is online at www.acttour.com/thompson-speedway.

Thompson Speedway opens its 82nd season of oval track racing with the 47th Icebreaker on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11. The 10-division card includes the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Thompson Outlaw Open Modified Series, the PASS Super Late Models, and eight other divisions. An optional Test N’ Tune practice day is slated for Friday, April 9 with all Icebreaker divisions welcome. Grandstand attendance is limited to 25% of capacity.
