Gluchacki Launches a Strong Championship Bid with Magic Mile Victory

 Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Loudon, NH — We couldn’t properly call it the Northeast Classic without Mother Nature staying true and changing the weather 987-times in a seventy-two-hour span. We experienced it all, warm sunshine, blistering winds, downpouring rain, skies both clear and packed with clouds and even the occasional flurry of snow. Through it all, well over a hundred different stock cars took to the 1.058-mile New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the 2nd Annual Northeast Classic with Derek Gluchacki taking the biggest win of his career in the 50-lap ACT Late Model Tour season-opening event.

Unfortunate mechanical failures from early-season gremlins whittled a 38-car field that participated in Friday practice to a 32-car starting grid for Sunday’s Northeast Classic. Bolstered by Canadian teams returning stateside for the first time in two years, a strong contingent of new faces and a collection of old favorites, the American-Canadian Tour was ready to start off the 31st season of Late Model racing in the Northeast United States and Canada.

Case-in-point, when the field started off for warm-up laps they were led by St-Edouard, Quebec’s Dany Trepanier, multi-time ACT winner Dillon Moltz and Jeffery Lebrecque Jr. from Strafford, New Hampshire. From the initial green, it was the ‘5’ show. Moltz in the RB Performance #5ME led the early goings with the #5MA of Tom Carey III hot on his heels.

On Lap 13, Quebec City’s Alexandre Tardif got sideways coming out of turn-two and slammed hard into the inside retaining wall on the backstretch, allowing the #91QC of Patrick Laperle, among others, to hit pit road for much needed adjustments. On the restart, Moltz chose the outside which allowed Carey to taking the lead on Lap 14 using the inside line. The five’s continued to stay in file across the speedway with the #7NH of former North East Mini Stock Tour (NEMST) champion Cody Leblanc stalling out in his rookie-year venture with ACT.

Following the Lap 26 competition caution, ‘TC-3’ continued to lead with Moltz stalking from behind, closely followed by DJ Shaw and Jimmy Hebert in third and fourth. This foursome would pace the field with Gluchacki and local Late Model star Jaime Swallow Jr. jousting each other in and out of the Top-5. Given the ten-to-go signal from Chief Starter Jason Lamoy, Hebert became the first to step out and try a new line, nearly taking second from Moltz in turn-two. Poised to work the bottom again in turns three and four, it all went up in smoke when Woody Pitkat and Raphael Lessard smashed into the turn-four SAFER barrier, ending their day just nine laps early.

On the restart, Hebert again darted to the bottom under Carey just after the start/finish line before bombarding into turn-one. Again, the move would be squandered by a yellow flag flying after the frontstretch spin by Derek Ming and a right-front flat tire under the Shawn Swallow machine. A second restart proved disastrous when Hebert went spinning, sliding backward into the turn-two wall, pinching 2021 Rookie of the Year Erick Sands with him while the avoidance-melee took several mid-packers including Jacob Burns, Remi Perreault, Jamie Swallow Sr. and Robby Gordon Douglas.

Following the red flag cleanup, Carey would lead Gluchacki, Moltz, Shaw and Jamie Swallow Jr. to the final restart of the race. Gluchacki launched beneath the Brookside Equipment #5MA, leading Lap 44 while a three-wide blanket of yellow and orange followed in the fight for fourth with Laperle pushing past Swallow Jr. and Moltz to steal the position. Keeping his momentum, Laperle would lead over Shaw for third on Lap-45 by just a grill cover! Carey would mount one final charge against Gluchacki in the final two laps, but the #03MA prevailed.

Gluchacki’s victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway is the biggest of his young career, his second ACT Late Model Tour win following Thompson Speedway’s Sunoco World Series in 2021. Tom Carey III earned his second-consecutive silver Northeast Classic trophy while Patrick Laperle made his return to the United States a statement, earning his best NHMS finish in third. DJ Shaw in the A.H. Fence #04VT took fourth and Dillon Moltz capped a strong run with fifth. 2013 Serie-ACT Champion Dany Trepanier took sixth, defending ACT Tour champion Ben Rowe charged from 25th to finish seventh, Jamie Swallow Jr., Jean-Phillippe Bergeron and Shawn Swallow rounded out the top-10.

The ACT Late Model Tour returns to its roots with the 24th Annual Community Bank N.A. 150 at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, Vermont on Sunday, May 1st. The ACT Late Models will also join the annual Thunder Road car show and practice day on Saturday, April 30th alongside the Lenny’s Show & Apparel Flying Tigers, rk Miles Street Stocks and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors. Race-day schedules, times and pricing information will be available soon on both acttour.com and thunderroadvt.com. The Community Bank N.A. 150 will also be available live online and around the world on FloRacing!

North East Race Cars and Speed Returns to Stafford Speedway’s Contingency Program

 Posted by Wayne G.Barber

(Stafford Springs, CT)---For the second consecutive season, Northeast Race Cars and Speed will be a presenting sponsor in Stafford Motor Speedway’s contingency program.  Northeast Race Cars will present a weekly $150 bonus to each SK Modified® feature winner and will also have their parts trailer on hand in the paddock to offer Stafford teams trackside parts and service.

“We had a great time last season helping out SK Modified® drivers with our contingency sponsorship and we’re looking forward to enjoying another exciting season of racing at Stafford,” said Scott Nordman of Northeast Race Cars and Speed.  “We were pleased to work out a deal with the track and we were happy to bring the parts trailer to the track and help out teams with anything they might need.”

Stafford’s premier SK Modified® division is one of the most competitive weekly short track divisions anywhere in the country and the 2021 season backed that up with 10 different feature winners over a 20-race schedule.  Stephen Kopcik led all drivers with 5 wins last season with defending SK Modified® champion Todd Owen taking down 3 feature wins.  Other multiple feature winners included Michael Christopher, Jr., Tyler Hines, and Keith Rocco while David Arute, Chase Dowling, Andrew Molleur, Bryan Narducci, and Ronnie Williams all notched a single win.  The competition level should remain at an ultra high level with 9 of the 10 feature winners from last season all returning to SK Modified® competition along with a host of drivers hungry for their first win.  Dowling is the only 2021 winner not registered as a 2022 weekly competitor.

North East Race Cars and Speed will team with Maybury Material Handling, McKinney Construction, and New England Racing Fuel, Sunoco to push the weekly SK Modified® winners check to nearly $2,000 at $1,975.

Day 2 Thompson Speedway Ice Breaker 2022

Posted by Wayne G. Barber &  Photo by Wayne G. Barber

Mike Jr. Brings the Christopher Name Back to Icebreaker Glory

Thompson, CT — The famous American author Mark Twain once said, “If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.” If anyone ever needed concrete evidence of that quotation, they should’ve been standing in Thompson, Connecticut on Saturday, April 9th. After on-again, off-again rain showers, the crew at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park were able to prepare the racing surface for one of New England’s biggest Tour-type Modified events; the Icebreaker 125.

Utilizing the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) ‘Plus/Minus’ qualifying system, the Icebreaker 125 was led to green by Connecticut Modified master Todd Owen with a plus-six beside young Matt Swanson, who earned a solid plus-five in his respective heat. Swanson quickly charged to the lead on lap 4 with Jon McKennedy, Eric Goodale and Teddy Hodgdon fighting for 3rd through 5th on the field. The first caution took place on lap 17 with, ironically, the #17 of Kevin Folan going for a spin in the middle of turns three and four.

Following the restart, Goodale stalked Swanson before jumping into the lead on lap 24 with McKennedy following close behind and around the early leader for 2nd. This trio flew around the Thompson 5/8-mile until David Arute slammed into the turn-one wall on lap 40, stacking the field for a fierce restart between Goodale and McKennedy. The #79 would lead until Ronnie Williams, after a strong day and a 3rd place starting position, slowed on the backstretch and brought out the caution. In a devastating coincidence, the Ronnie Williams team car driven by Swanson met a similar fate just nine laps later with Swanson losing power coming out of turn-four, bringing out another caution.

The restart on lap 53 brought Mike Christopher Jr. into the top-3, and by lap 78, Junior moved the Tommy Baldwin #7NY into second around Goodale then took to stalking McKennedy. A lap 99 accident between Keith Rocco and Artie Pederson in turn-four gave everyone the golden opportunity to hop into the pits for fresh tires and a splash of fuel. On the restart it was Anthony Nocella with the quick-stop, Christopher Jr., Goodale, McKennedy and Bobby Santos III after his ‘Free Pass’ savior to keep the #44MA on the lead lap.

Christopher Jr. would lead the rest of the way in dominating fashion, turning his fastest time on lap 112. In victory lane, young Mike Christopher Jr. thanked Tommy Baldwin’s team for their lightning pit-stop, saying the last 25 laps were the best he’d ran all night. Jon McKennedy was disappointed with yet another 2nd place finish in Tour-type Modifieds at Thompson but excited about the team’s long run speed. Eric Goodale’s 3rd place finish also mirrored McKennedy’s disappointment but thanked his team’s efforts, saying the trip back to Long Island wouldn’t be all that bad. Anthony Nocella bounced back from early problems for 4th and Bobby Santos III hard-charged for a strong 5th place finish in the Tinio Motorsports entry.

The always thrilling Limited Sportsman started off the night’s feature action with an incredible 26-car field. Following some opening lap spins, a strong three-way battle between Rhode Island’s Corey Fanning and the Connecticut duo of Aaron Plemons and ‘Leadfoot’ Larry Barnett dominated the 25-lap event. The bouncing, floating Limited Sportsman-drivers jumped around the Thompson highbanks and, after surviving a late charge by Danielson’s Troy Waterman, Fanning would cross the finish in 1st with Plemons and multi-time champion Barnett taking 2nd and 3rd.

A late addition to the line-up last week, the Mini Stocks held a sprinting, green to checkered feature. After bobbing and weaving, the #82 of Kevin Moore took the lead with just five to go and stalked by the Michalski family of Steve and Scott, in the #44 and #51 respectively, under the twin checkered flags. It would be Moore’s first Thompson Speedway victory.

Another first-time victory came in the SK Lite Modifieds. Early in the 25-lap feature, it was a four-car breakaway at the front with Steven Chapman’s #14, the #88 machine of Mark Bakaj, the #39 of George Bessette Jr., and John O’Sullivan in the #15. Bakaj loosened in the closing laps, nearly taking himself and O’Sullivan out in turn-four on lap 18. In the end it was Chapman in the #14 taking his first Thompson victory, yelling triumphantly, “I know how to get to victory lane finally!” Bessette Jr. and Tyler Chapman, in the second family-team car, nabbed 2nd and 3rd.

To finish the night’s festivities, the Thompson ACT-type Late Models, led by Woody Pitkat in the Helliwell Motorsports entry, took the green for their 35-lap feature. From the get-go, previous winner Derek Gluchacki door-smacked Pitkat coming out of tricky turn-two and ran off with the lead. Pitkat’s day would go from bad to worse, later slamming into the lap car of Charles Bailey IV on lap 26 bringing out the event’s lone caution. Gluchacki would be surrounded by former champions Rick Gentes, Nick Johnson and Brian Tagg, but held on till the end. Gluchacki took down the win followed by Tagg and Johnson in 2nd and 3rd with a strong run for Mike Benevides for 4th and 2021 Late Model champion Ryan Morgan taking 5th. Results continue to be unofficial pending further technical inspection of the top-three.

Thompson Speedway will roar back to life on Wednesday, June 15th for the first of four midweek summer events at the 5/8-mile oval. The Nutmeg State 75 for the Outlaw Open Modified Series plus feature action for the Sunoco Modifieds, ACT-type Late Models, SK Lite Modifieds, Limited Sportsman and Mini Stocks. More information including times and prices will be announced in the near future.
