Adrien Paradis, III Wins R.A.D. Auto Machine Street Stock Rookie of the Year Honors at Stafford Speedway

(Stafford Springs, CT)---After running the Sportsman division at Waterford from 2016-2018, Plainville, CT native Adrien Paradis, III came to Stafford for 2019 to try his hand in the Street Stock division.  The driver of the #19 CSB Communications Chevrolet had never previously raced at Stafford but proved that lack of experience wouldn’t be an issue recording a 7th place finish in his first start.  From there, Paradis finished all but one of this season’s 20 Street Stock races in the top-10, cruising to R.A.D. Auto Machine Rookie of the Year honors over Marvin Minkler.

“I missed out on winning rookie of the year when I first started racing at Waterford, so that was one of our main goals for the season,” said Paradis.  “It’s a pretty cool feeling.  I think we went above and beyond our expectations for this season, especially being our first year at Stafford.  Originally we wanted to finish in the top-10 in points and we ended up finishing fifth.  We certainly would have liked to be on the podium a little more than we were, but Stafford is a tough track and it was a totally different driving style than what I was used to, so there was a lot of learning on my part this year.  I really have to thank my entire crew, my parents, Mike Davis, Joe Brockett, and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything without my sponsors CSB Communications, Midstate Air Compressor, KCM, Auto Glass Specialists, and East Coast Packaging.”

With having never previously raced at Stafford, getting to grips with the Stafford half-mile layout was Paradi’s biggest challenge during his rookie campaign.  Paradis had to adjust from the tight confines of Waterford to deal with the longer straightaways at Stafford. In addition to a different track layout the driver of the #19 car had to learn how to race with a restrictor plate which has been used for years in Stafford’s Street Stock and Dare Stock division. After running one full season with a restrictor plate, Paradis may have an advantage entering 2020, as the restrictor plate has been removed from the Street Stock rulebook.

“I think the driving style was the biggest thing for me to adapt to this season,” said Paradis.  “At Waterford, you can drive a lot deeper into the corners where at Stafford you have to back the corner up and let the car roll for a lot longer.  I was overdriving the car into the corners and with the restrictor plate that really hurt us coming off the corner.  With the restrictor plate on the car, any little mistake you make gets amplified because you don’t have the power to overcome it.  I can’t wait for next season with the restrictor plates coming off the cars.”

Paradis’ best finish this season was a third place finish on August 23, his lone podium finish of the season.  With a full season’s worth of experience under his belt, Paradis is excited to get back on track in 2020 and fight for more podium finishes and his first career win.

“I think we’ll be ahead of the game for the start of next season,” said Paradis.  “We changed our setup to try a couple different things at the end of the season to try to get ready for next season and see how the car would react.  Hopefully we can be up front every week and put the car in victory lane.  Our main goal is going to be to win a race or two next season.  I think we have things figured out for the most part and I have a great setup guy so it’s all going to come down to me as the driver.  Obviously I’d love to win the championship next year but if we can go a couple spots better than we were this year and finish in the top-3 in points, that would be good for us.”

With Paradis establishing that he can be a consistent runner this season with 19 top-10 finishes in 20 starts, he will be looking to carry over his consistency to next season and combine his consistency with his year of experience at Stafford to be front runner every week.

“This season was awesome for us,” said Paradis.  “We were pretty fast right off the trailer at the first race and we managed to have consistent finishes with no major wrecks that caused damage to the car.  I think we showed this year that consistent finishes will keep you towards the top and consistency along with winning some races is what is going to win the championship.”

Ray Christian wins the final battle but Joey Doiron wins the war in 2019

Posted by Wayne G. Barber
Ray Christian ended the GSPSS season on a high note as the Granite State Pro Stock series completed their season at the Claremont Motorsports Park. The series finale was the headliner of the return of the fall challenge. Series President Mike Parks made the decision to lease the Claremont NH facility and stage a two day event after the traditional season ending event at The Waterford Speedbowl was canceled.
A number of support divisions, highlighted by the return of the dirt modifieds and pro trucks, were run on Saturday to set the stage for a huge Sunday of racing. The decision was made to have the pro stocks run their entire program on Sunday including all qualifying as many of the series teams come from a substantial distance.
Out first it was the Crazy Horse Race for the Pole won by 2018 series champion Devin O’Connell. O’Connell hasn’t had the season he hoped for as he tried to defend his Championship but seemed to be on track to end his season on a positive note.
Up next were a pair of twelve lap heat races. Local Driver Luke Hinkley was able to comfortably win the first one much to the delight of the fans. Heat Race number was won by Ray Christian III in fairly dominant fashion and was a sign of things to come.
Up next was the GSPSS redraw which landed Christian on the pole with O’Connell to his outside and Luke Hinkley right behind them in third. Joey Doiron would simply need to start the feature to clinch the championship and would do so from mid pack.
As victory lane was wrapping up for the sportsman modified race just before the GSPSS feature, it began to sprinkle just a little bit. Series officials made the decision to forgo all planned prerace festivities and get the race under way as quickly as possible.
At the drop of the green flag it was all team 93 as Ray Christian was gone in a hurry. Christian stretched the lead to almost four seconds and a full straight away as he lapped up through seventh position. “Mitch and Mickey Green gave me a great car today”, said the CT driver in victory lane. “This is a great way to end our season and go into the off season.”
Behind him Joey Doiron was working his way from a mid pack starting position all the way to second but the lead was just to much. Doiron would need a late race caution to have any shot at Christian but it never came and the newly crowned champion would have to settle for second.
Local driver Luke Hinkley always looks forward to racing at the Claremont oval and today was no different. Hinkley had a solid run starting in third and finishing there after the caution free event. Hinkley was all smiles in victory lane with friends and family. “We were a little tight today”, he said. “We weren’t quite perfect but its nice to race at home. Thanks to Mike Parks and Granite State for putting this on.”
2018 Champion Devin O’Connell completed his championship reign with a solid fourth place finish. O’Connell didn’t have the championship defense he had hoped for but a solid season none the less.
Completing the top five was DJ Shaw. Shaw was running a car that was badly Damaged earlier in the season. His Dale Shaw Race Cars team rebuilt the car over the summer and used one of DJ’s favorite tracks to test it out. The end result was a solid fifth place finish for the second generation driver.
When the green flag finally flew on the final race of the 2019 GSPSS season it became official that Joey Doiron was the champion. Doiron has avoided talking points all year long but when asked, finally acquiesced in victory lane. “We can talk about it now that its over”, he said. “This is a neat deal, we came so close last year but a couple of mechanical failures caused us to come up short.” After taking some time to reflect Doiron added, “it’s just my dad and I in the shop so this is pretty cool. I need to thank all the guys who come to the track and my family for their support. Now we’ll go back to the shop, rebuild and try to come back stronger next year.”

Up next for the Granite State Pro Stock Series will be the 2019 banquet of champions. It is almost a certainty that it will be held at the Thompson Speedway Clubhouse on a date to be determined. For more information check www.gspss.net or get updates on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Doug Coby Secures Sixth NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Title at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park

Class Act !

Coby celebrates at the Bud 150

The main event brought the drivers of the Whelen Modified Tour front and center for one final time in 2019 for their season-ending Sunoco World Series 150.

Two champions sought to claim the title in the main feature at a track where both had seen great success in the past. Five-time champion Doug Coby carried a 19-point lead over defending champion Justin Bonsignore and needed a fourteenth-place finish to guarantee himself another title regardless of what Bonsignore did. Bonsignore, on the other hand, knew that the only way he could control his own destiny was to win and hope that something went wrong for Coby.

Bonsignore almost got his wish, as Coby suffered tire issues in the opening laps causing him to pit and be mired back in traffic. Coby worked his way methodically through the field, eventually entering the top ten by lap 115, while Bonsignore led most of the race and survived a late-race challenge from Ron Silk to claim is seventh Thompson win in the last eight races. With his top-ten finish, Coby wrapped up his sixth title, putting him second all-time behind the late Mike Stefanik.

“This is really tough to do. It’s hard to win one championship and then it’s hard to win two and then to keep doing what these guys do with preparation, the shop and the dedication, the days away from the family, the work days to fly to places and drive to places. This isn’t easy to do. It’s a special feeling to win a race on this tour and to win a championship, let alone six,” Coby said. He later said he cherishes each win and each title as if it were his last victory.

“Nothing is given in this sport. (This title) is well earned by my team, I’ll tell you that much.”

Justin Bonsignore celebrated a victory, his series leading sixth of the season, but lamented on what could have been had they started the season with a better result right out of the gate. “We spotted them way too many points in the beginning of the year and they’re way to good of a team to give that big of a lead. I’m really proud of our effort,” Bonsignore said. “We didn’t get the championship, but we backed up eight wins last year with six wins this year, so I’m really proud of my whole team.”

Ron Silk, Matt Swanson, Bobby Santos, III, and Woody Pitkat rounded out the top five. Coby finished seventh.
