The Limited Sportsman division has always been a fan favorite at Thompson with it's rubbin&racing style of leaning on one another on the banked turns and tonight 22 race teams answered the invitation to race for those checkers.
The track broke it down to two heat races to determine a starting order for the main feature race.
A big treat for the die hard race fans was the addition of some new teams to the veteran mix and the entries were as Melby, a judge on Americas Got Talent, would say "Spot On "
The two new entries were the #55 Banta Racing car that was driven last year by Steve Kenneway who I covered two weeks ago at Seekonk Speedway in the first point race for the North East Street Stock Tour Series. Tonight the listed add on driver was Diego Monahan who is no stranger to Thompson, He and his brother Shawn have logged a few laps at Thompson. Memory serves me, a few good laps and a occasional DQ after.
The second entry I spotted in the early practice sessions were the sparkling white #88 driven by Stafford regular Frank LeToile Jr. who I also covered at Seekonk Speedway in the Street Tour.
Larry Barnett rebuilt his car and sold the VMRS modified to a Frenchman in Canada and will run a limited schedule with the historical #73 with so many championships and victories. I think he's spotting for half the race teams in New England and now he is a trained road course expert too.
Heat #1
#75 Ryan Waterman |
#75 Ryan Waterman from Danielson,Conn. who won the last limited sportsman race at Thompson and then had it stripped away for aggressive driving redeemed himself and beat #38 Cory Hutchings who for the past two years has been the dominant factor in the division. Third place was veteran Al stone III who has chalked up a lot of hardware at New London Waterford and other facilities in his stellar career. 4th posted #51 Joshua Wood who made the trip and 5th to #58 Scott Young from Williamantic, Conn.
Heat #2
#88 Frank LeToile Jr. |
Feature Results: LAPS 20
In the first three laps it was clear to everyone that the #75 of Waterman and the #88 LeToile car along with the pre-race Mohegan Sun odds favorite #38 Cory Hutchings were about to put on a show and man they did. Heck, Moose has won everything this year and could get no closer than 4th all night.
The XtraMart Limited Sportsman Series featured a neck and neck battle between eventual winner Ryan Waterman and runner-up Corey Hutchins for much of the twenty-lap event. Waterman initially took the lead with sixteen laps to go passing early frontrunner Frank L’Etoile, Jr. Hutchins followed suit staying on Waterman’s back bumper until eventually taking the lead with seven laps to go.
Waterman took the lead back, using the lapped car of Tyler Cinamelia as a pick, and went on to lead the final laps of the race. Following the win he said it was a challenging and hard fought victory. “I tried to keep my head calm for once and I wanted to race (Hutchins) good. I think I did. We had some fun. His car just went away from him,” said Waterman. He added that the car was consistent the entire race and allowed him to be competitive thanks to the work his crew, including his father, did to prepare it for the event.
