Ellington, CT: Josh Sunn was victories at Bear Ridge Speedway for the 2015 season opening race of the USAC Dirt Midget Associations. For Sunn, it was a hard fought victory with his FMR teammate Adam Pierson.
For heat race one the 1R of Jeff Horn was on the pole with the 11 of Alex Rose starting second. When the green flag waived the field line up quickly changed with the 50 of Vince Lucca taking control of the race lead followed by the 3 of Joe Krawiec with Horn in the 1R moving back to third. By the time the race hit the fifth lap, Krawiec in the 3 was in the lead and never looked back. Krawiec from Bristol. CT driving the number 3 Seals-it sponsored midget took the checker flag for the first heat race of the season. Following in second was Ray Miller of East Granby, CT in the 1W then the 69 of Dean Christensen from Granby, CT for third.
In heat race two, Mike Chaffee piloting the 18C was on the pole with the 47 of Scott Holcomb in second. Before the field could complete the first lap, Josh Sunn in his 67 took a commanding lead moving Chaffee in the 18C to second with the 47 of Holcomb now in third. The race action in mid pack was tight with positions changing often between the 76 of Adam Pierson, the 4 of Kevin Chaffee and 46 driven by Kenny Johnson. In the end it was Josh Sunn of White River Junction, VT in his FMR 67 taking the win. Coming home second was the 18 of Mike Chaffee from Corinth, VT and the 47 of Scott Holcomb from Granby, CT in third.
The Midget Dash four lap race included the top three finishers of each heat race. The 47 of Scott Holcomb was on pole with the 18 of Mike Chaffee on the outside of row one. The action was quick with only four laps to race and the laps went by without issue with the 47 of Holcomb leading from flag to flag winning the dash race and getting the first trophy of the new race season for the Granby, CT driver.
After the heat races and before the feature, Bear Ridge Speedway along with all of the teams and fans took a moment to remember long time speedway worker Penny Davis who passed away earlier this year. For many years Penny was a fixture in the pit area helping the teams and drivers line up before each race.
The feature race had the 1R of Jeff Horn taking the pole with the 11 of Alex Rose starting outside row one. When the green flag was displayed the field took off into turn one but before getting to turn two there was a multi-car incident that included the 3 of Joe Krawiec, 1W of Ray Miller and the 69 of Dean Christensen coming together. Once the dust settled all but the 3 of Krawiec where able to proceed. The field was lined back up again for the restart and once back to green the 1R of Horn took the lead up until lap seven when the pressure from Josh Sunn in the 67 was applied to Horn and the lead changed with Sunn now in the lead by lap eight. By this time, the 76 of Adam Pierson who is the teammate of Sunn, had moved into second with Horn in the 1R now in third. From fourth back the positions changed often from lap to lap which brought excitement to the full house of fans in attendance. By lap fifteen the 67 of Sunn and the 76 of Pierson had pulled away from the pack and when the race was over it was Josh Sunn in the FMR 67 of White River Junction, VT victories with his FMR teammate Adam Pierson also from the Green Mountain State in the 76 for second and with Jeff Horn of Ashland, MA in third.
