Dylan Estrella completed his Late Model season with three consecutive feature wins to claim the championship over reigning champ, Bobby Pelland III. Estrella had chased Pelland most of the season, not moving past until the win streak began.
In the feature, Rob Murphy lead off the pole as Jeramee Lillie came from the second row to get under Nick Uhrig as Vinny Arrenegado looked under him. Vinny backed out but took a second shot and took over second. Estrella came up from seventh to get past Uhrig and Lillie, then nosed ahead into third in turn three of lap two.
Vinny locked onto Murphy’s bumper as Gerry DeGasparre, Jr. worked under Lillie, who was stuck outside and Mark Hudson was under Charlie Rose. Vinny began to edge below Murphy. Estrella looked under Arrenegado and made contact. He made a miraculous save as Arrenegado moved forward below Murphy. He moved alongside, then pulled ahead in turn three, completing the pass coming out of turn four. Estrella then ducked under Murphy with DeGasparre on Estrella’s tail. They pushed forward, setting Murphy back to fourth and Estrella took on Arrenegado’s lead.
It took him two laps but he was past into the lead and DeGasparre continued underneath to put Arrenegado two down with Murphy on his bumper. But a spin on the backstretch brought caution and Pelland, who had been struggling with his car, ran for the pits.
On the restart, Estrella nosed away from Arrenegado and took control in turn two. DeGasparre tried to follow underneath, but Vinny dropped and shut the door. Austin Blais had come up to harass DeGasparre. Murphy followed with Hudson on his bumper. By lap 23, Estrella was eight cars ahead of his pursuers.
By lap 27, Charlie Rose had come up on Blais but was unable to get by and Murphy hung on his tail with Pelland, Hudson and TJ Moreshead following. The finishing field had been established with three laps remaining and they crossed the final mile of competition strung out in order.
Estrella had the win and the championship. It was his third feature win in a row and his sixth on the season.
Arrenegado hung on to second, ahead of DeGasparre, Blais and Rose. Murphy finished sixth followed by Pelland, Hudson, Moreshead, Uhrig and Lillie. In a hotly contested Rookie of the Year Trophy for the division was also settled tonight with Austin (Bullet) Blais sneaking by Nick Uhrig.
