Star Speedway, Epping NH
The 50th Star Classic 150 for the ISMA winged supers has always been a special event, bringing in teams from across the US and Canada to the Weber family's fast quarter mile Star Speedway, and the large crowd on hand was not disappointed.
After 25 supers took time trials, the field was set for 150 laps of hot big block, fuel injected action.
Jeff Locke of Raymond, NH and Dan Bowes of Byfield, MA brought the field down to John Spence Jr's green flag. Locke lazared into the lead as the field quickly strung out until Dave Duggan of Milford, NH brought out the first yellow flag for his slide off turn three on lap 21.
Locke was untouchable on the restart, but again his charge was halted for Tommy Tomberello's spin on lap 34. Again Locke shot into the lead while behind him third place Timmy Jedrzejek of Independence, OH mounted a challenge on second place Dan Bowes, as the two ran side-by-side, but Bowes would prevail holding on to the runner up spot, only to be challenged again five laps later. Again Jedrzejek couldn't pull off the pass and settled back into third.
The most frightening moment of the race came on lap 43 when Eric Lewis of Solvay, NY made contact with a lapped car and slid off the back straightaway crashing his mount into trees well off the racing surface. This brought out the red flag allowing teams to refuel while safety crews attended to Lewis's car.
While Locke continued to dominate the front spot, Dave Shullick, JR of N.Ridgeville, OH decided it was time to go and he raced pass Mike Ordway Sr., Eddie Witkum and Jedrzejek in just three laps. That show of power put him third on lap 52.
By lap 70 Shullick raced past Bowes for second and quickly tracked down Locke five laps later.
A lap 82 caution for Danny Shirey's stalled car tightened the pack for the restart and Shullick took full advantage racing past Locke on the inside off turn four on lap 91. Shullick would dominate the last third of the race while Locke's brilliant run would end on lap 110, when he and Jon Gambutti made contact and crashed sliding along the front stretch wall.
The last restart of the event had Shullick pull away with ease has behind him Jeff Abold of Baldwinsville, NY picked off Mike Ordway Sr. for the third spot and two laps later Abold powered by Bowes for second place. With a handful of laps left Mark Sammut of London, Ontario, who had been making his way forward all race long, put a pass on a fading Ordway for third.
When the checkers flew on lap 150, five cars were on the lead lap, Shullick finished 10 seconds ahead of Abold with Sammut third, fourth was Ordway Sr., and Chris Perley of Rowley, MA was fifth.
