Wayne Burroughs continued his potential championship drive in 2016 with a strong run once again in the night’s 15-lap Monster Mini Stock feature. Burroughs started the day by extending his championship lead to sixteen-points after finding success in the heat races while his closest competition, reigning champion Dave Trudeau, tangled with Burroughs and had issues and retired early from the pre-race qualifying feature.
Trudeau would face more issues in the main feature starting from the rear for the Mini Stocks, retiring early once again due to mechanical issues, while Burroughs would win the race in dramatic fashion in a last turn pass on veteran Brad Caddick. Burroughs bumped Caddick coming out of turn four coming to the checkered flag and further solidified his position at the top of the standings, and clinched him the championship in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Triple Crown.
A big division story is the resurgence of the Roger Ducharme #34, a long time racer at Thompson almost winning his heat by 37 inches to Burroughs and then hitting his marks and having great restarts for a podium finish of third tonight. Yes, low budget teams can still compete in the Monster Mini's. Congratulations to the Angell Collision sponsored Keith Ballou #10 for a solid top 10 for the third time out of the last 4 races. His goal is a top 10 finish for the final season point standings and I think that with his fathers help Ballou will do it .It was nice to see the Louie Bellisle's retired race car #50 back out on the 5/8th super speedway driven by his son Scott. His dad Louie completed a very good racing career at last years World Series with a parting farewell victory to a very educated race fan base (2 minute standing ovation) from the sold out crowd.
“The car was definitely handling better than Brad (Caddick’s) I think,” said Burroughs. “We’ve got the same motor so being on the bottom he had a little more down the shoot than I did running off the outside. I knew where I could beat him and knew where I couldn’t and we finally got it down.” Burroughs said that he was unaware of the issues Trudeau was having during the event, learning the full extent of his excellent points day after he drove into victory lane.
Burroughs is the reigning 2015 mini division weekly track champion at the New London Waterford Speed Bowl and is leading here and there in his attempt to be the first with dual weekly division 2016 championships. The time is ticking away for Ken Cassidy and Dave Trudeau to stop him in his attempt. The winning drivers receive two beautiful medallions just like the Olympics and Burroughs chose my grandson Graham Barber to wear one home and spitfire Graham who enjoys driving a quarter midget on the Thompson Little T and wants to do the 10 lap for $20 again in October.
