(Stafford Springs, CT) --- The 3rd Annual NAPA Auto Parts SK 5k at Stafford Speedway is just around the corner and once again it’s becoming the biggest race of the 2016 season. The NAPA Fan Vote has returned and has over 600 votes cast for race distance, qualifying format, and how the Gambler’s Challenge Presented by Dunleavy’s Truck and Trailer Repair will be paid out. In addition to the fan fare of the NAPA SK 5K fan vote each heat race will also pay a purse. For the third consecutive year, thanks to Wheelers Auto of Hamden, SK Modified® drivers will be racing for a piece of a $500 in each qualifying heat race. Wheelers Auto will pay a bonus of $250 to each heat race winner, $150 to each heat race 2nd place finisher, and $100 to each heat race 3rd place finisher. The added bonus for the qualifying races is another piece of the already huge purse of over $30,000 for the SK Modified® division.
“We’ve done this the last couple years and we really enjoy doing stuff like this,” said John Rufrano, owner of Wheelers Auto. “It should make things a lot more exciting since there normally isn’t a payout for the heat races. Last year’s race was the most exciting race of the year and we’re looking forward to another night of excitement.”
In addition to the big race purse and payout for the qualifying races, the Gambler’s Challenge Presented by Dunleavy’s Truck & Trailer Repair is currently up to $4,000. To enter, drivers put up $100 and the total bonus pool will then be matched dollar for dollar by Doug Dunleavy. The total bonus will be awarded based on the results of the fan vote currently ongoing at staffordspeedway.com. With 20 drivers currently entered, the bonus for the Gambler’s Challenge is $4,000 and with more cars expected to enter, the total could climb to over $5,000.
The level of competition in Stafford’s SK Modified® division is once again proving to be the best weekly short track racing division anywhere in the country. Through 7 races in 2016 there have been 4 different feature winners, with Rowan Pennink winning three times, Woody Pitkat twice, and Eric Berndt and Ted Christopher each with one. Pennink and Christopher are currently tied for the SK Modified® points lead with Keith Rocco third, 34 points behind.
The $5,000 to win SK 5K won’t be the only entertainment at Stafford during the night of July 8th. Stafford Speedway will host the Brass Attack Band for a pre-race concert and the O’K and the Night Crew Band for post-race entertainment. There will also be a barbeque taking place on the midway with great food available to race fans for only $10.
